DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife manages nearly 65,000 acres of land that provides habitat for a multitude of wild plants, animals, fish, insects and rare species of all kinds. The Division spearheads several important wildlife and habitat conservation and education initiatives, including the Wildlife Species Conservation and Research Program and the Delaware Shorebird Project.

Summary Statement

Primary responsibilities will be associated with conducting field research with Delmarva fox squirrels (DFS) and helping with bat projects. Duties with DFS will include setting up and monitoring camera traps, assisting with translocation of DFS, trapping and transporting squirrels and conducting radio telemetry with translocated squirrels.  Work will be conducted independently in the spring and as team leader. Duties will also include soliciting reports of DFS sightings, maintaining Excel, Access and GIS databases and preparing technical reports under guidance of supervisor.  Bat work may include acoustic surveys, bat catches, radio telemetry, preparing outreach materials, resolving bat/human conflicts and managing data.  Much of the bat fieldwork will occur during evening and nighttime hours, sometimes in hot, humid and buggy conditions. This position will also assist with other projects.

  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects.
     
  • Collects field samples and data.
     
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community.
     
  • Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area.
     
  • Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval.
     
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment.
     
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
     
  • May assist in processing biological samples.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  2. Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  3. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
