Summary Statement

The incumbent will act as the central liaison for the Department of Correction’s legal services section. Responsibilities include tracking, processing and responding to Freedom of Information Act, subpoenas, court orders and medical requests. This position will facilitate production of discovery materials and work closely with Department Deputy Attorney Generals. The incumbent will be responsible for tracking pending litigation and criminal cases. The incumbent should be familiar with systems such as Westlaw and LexisNexis. The incumbent will review Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure compliance of legal actions and processes. The incumbent may provide technical assistance to staff.

Essential Functions

  • Establishes and maintains case files.
     
  • Reviews legal/court documents for completeness and accuracy.
     
  • Compiles and evaluates facts to complete program, legal, and/or court documents.
     
  • Provides administrative reports and recommendations for new/revised operating policies/procedures.
     
  • Reviews state and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance of legal actions/processes. 

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Legal Services Administrator
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Three years experience in preparing and maintaining legal documents and case files.
  2. Three years experience in legal research which includes researching statutes, regulations, case law and background information via computer or library searches.
  3. Three years experience in drafting legal documents which includes presenting facts, setting out and analyzing legal precedents.
  4. Six months experience in conducting investigations which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence, analyzing and interpreting data collected, and documenting findings for trial preparation and response to litigation; and assisting in witness preparation for trial.
  5. Six months experience in developing policies and procedures.
  6. Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.

Conditions of Hire

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process. 

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.
