Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for providing instruction and supervision to a group of chronically mentally ill or visually impaired/multihandicapped or developmentally disabled sheltered workshop clients.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent in this class functions under the supervision of a Sheltered Workshop Production Foreman and is involved in instructing clients in production techniques and procedures and providing support to clients to assist them in developing social and vocational skills. A significant aspect of the work involves establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clients.  A class incumbent is responsible for maintaining a smooth production flow throughout the work area. This involves monitoring client work performance to insure productivity and quality control, compliance with safety procedures and to note behavior changes. The incumbent in this position assists in the evaluation of clients production, work skills, habits and attitudes to determine their rate of pay.

Essential Functions

  • Instructs clients in production techniques and procedures to insure understanding of work assignments and proper use of equipment and tools; motivates and supervises clients in the completion of their work assignments.
     
  • Maintains even production flow and insures quality control and timely completion of contract work.
     
  • Keeps records and completes forms to keep track of client work performance and/or daily production and cost records.
     
  • Assists in the evaluation of clients attendance, punctuality, quality and quantity of work produced to determine individual rates of pay; may prepare monthly evaluation reports on and conduct annual assessments on assigned clients including behavior observations.
     
  • Insures that all safety practices are enforced.
     
  • Provides individual support to clients to assist with personal and social adjustment problems.
     
  • May operate forklift and drive truck to pick-up and deliver contract work.

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of operating workshop tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to deal with chronically mentally ill or visually impaired/multiply disabled clients and use sound judgement in difficult situation.
  • Ability to supervise and instruct clients in various workshop activities.
  • Ability to inspect work to insure that quality standards are met.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with facility staff and business shipping and receiving departments.
    Ability to use workshop tools, equipment and machinery.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Sheltered Workshop Production Assistant
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in working with persons with disabilities.
  2. Six months experience in instructing and assisting clients in developing functional, social, recreational and vocational skills. 
  3. Six months experience in data collection which includes collecting, compiling and maintaining data from multiple sources such as files, records, databases, customers, staff or others.
  4. Six months experience in record keeping which includes maintaining records, logs, and filing systems.
  5. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  6. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
