Summary Statement

The class incumbent is responsible for providing diagnostic assessments for adults with multiple handicaps. 

Nature and Scope

The class incumbent reports to the Hospital Director and is responsible for organizing, planning and managing the Adult Diagnostic Unit which provides diagnostic assessments, on a statewide basis, for adults with multiple handicaps including mental illness, alcoholism and drug abuse disorders. The incumbent develops program descriptions, policies and procedures and formulation of treatment/service plans. The incumbent is responsible for special projects such as the compilation of information for the Gatekeeping report and researching new admissions procedures to maximize the delivery of care/treatment to patients. A significant aspect of this work involves meeting with referral sources, interviewing patient and families, recruiting clinical specialists for diagnostic input and making recommendations for extension of services to the client.

  • Oversees and directs the Adult Diagnostic Unit.
  • Develops program descriptions, policies and procedures and formulation of treatment plans.
  • Oversees quality of care provided by public sector clinicians and private consultants.
  • Insures implementation of treatment plans in either a hospital or community facility.
  • Reviews medical and clinical records on referred patients to determine if records are current, thorough and accurate.
  • Meets with patients and/or families to evaluate clinical status.
  • Develops and issues final report on each referral.
  • Conducts special projects such as overseeing the data collection and analysis; Makes recommendations for identification and resolution of problem areas.

  • Knowledge of mental illness, deficiency deterioration and personality disorders.
  • Knowledge of treatment/service planning and psychiatric rehabilitation methods for mentally ill and/or emotionally disturbed persons.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Adult Diagnostic Unit Coordinator
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in health or human services program administration such as overseeing and directing the development, implementation and evaluation of health or human services programs and services; planning and establishing short and long range program goals and objectives. Providing advice to other agency organizational units through consultation.
  2. Three years experience in health or human services work such as applying theories, principles, laws and practices of health or human services programs and services that assist with and improve life for individuals, families, or communities such as financial support, employment, unemployment, housing, health care, disease prevention, substance abuse, child protective services, physical/mental health treatment and prevention or rehabilitation.
  3. Six months experience in developing policies and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  5. Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.
