Summary Statement

This class is responsible for managing the operations of a public shooting range.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to an administrative superior. Work involves planning, coordinating and directing the daily operation and maintenance of a public shooting range. Range facilities include stationary and complex progressive target stations for archery, trap and skeet as well as conference and educational facilities geared to nature study, various firearms safety and related areas. A significant aspect of this work involves design of progressive target stations that challenge the gunner without jeopardizing the safety of others progressing through range.

Essential Functions

  • Schedules, assigns and reviews the work of full time and seasonal range staff.
     
  • Ensures the safety of range participants.
     
  • Designs and maintains challenging and complex target courses.
     
  • Ensures efficient maintenance of grounds, buildings and equipment.
     
  • Ensures correct accounting for receipts, disbursements and supply inventories.
     
  • Participates in budget preparation and long-term planning for range development.
     
  • Plans and schedules shooting activities and coordinates long-term scheduling of range use.
     
  • Establishes curriculum and conducts training for full time staff and seasonal range officers.
     
  • Recommends, implements and enforces policies and range rules pertaining to public use.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of shooting sports including trap, skeet and archery.
  • Knowledge of range design and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, procedures and methods associated with a range facility.
  • Knowledge of construction, building and equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledge of state budgetary and fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Skill in planning and scheduling staff to accommodate peak and slack demands for range use.
  • Skill in use of firearms.
  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of complex trap and skeet instruments.
  • Ability to prepare and present educational programs appropriate to various ages, interests and skill level.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Rangemaster
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. One year experience in operating a shooting range such as skeet, trap, clay archery or target.
  2. One year experience in maintaining and repairing shooting range equipment such as skeet, trap, clay, archery or target.
  3. One year experience in firearms use, care and safety.
  4. One year experience in inventory control such as ordering, receiving, tracking, storing and handling inventory; disbursing materials, supplies and equipment.
  5. One year experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
