Summary Statement

This class is responsible for supervising operators of a large scale, teleprocessing computing system.

  • Supervises 3-5 employees on 2 to 3 shifts.
  • Network has 300 to 500 terminals.

Nature and Scope

Supervision is provided by an administrative superior. Duties include supervising employees, insuring that the system operates at maximum efficiency and, during the night shift, providing assistance to system users having difficulty accessing the computer. Principal contacts are with users in order to provide assistance and with operators to provide instruction.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of subordinates and trains employees.
  • Ensures that the computer system operates at maximum efficiency by monitoring workflow and resolving problems.
  • Operates a large scale computer and peripheral equipment.
  • Trouble shoots computer and network malfunctions, rectifying operator errors, referring software problems to a programmer or notifying the vendor of hardware failure.
  • Writes reports and logs.
  • Monitors environmental controls, taking appropriate action when required.
  • Monitors and insures the security of the premises.
  • Schedules work according to priorities, insuring that jobs which interfere with each other are not run concurrently.
  • During night shift, has responsibility of ensuring that system users are able to access the computer.
  • May supervise employees in production control and tape library functions.
  • May coordinate the installation of and install terminals and remote printers.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Computer Operations Supervisor I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Three years experience in operating a mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
  2. Three years experience in detecting computer and network malfunctions.
  3. Three years experience in rectifying computer and network malfunctions.
  4. Six months experience in job control language.
  5. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
