Please Note:
- Work schedule flexibility is required in order to meet the demands of the job.
- Incumbents must have a valid CT driver's license.
- Consistent travel between DDS locations on site and across the state may need to be done at short notice.
The Role:
In this role, you will provide oversight to the Step-Down Unit, which is designed to divert individuals in crisis from emergency room settings. The Step-Down Unit provides intensive behavioral support and stabilization while working with teams to develop comprehensive transition plans to an appropriate, long term, community based residential setting. Along with other duties as needed, we will have you:
- Ensures compliance with state regulations and licensing requirements
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies, programs, scheduling and operating procedures
- Ensures the fiscal policies and procedures are followed by direct care staff.
- Oversight of all staff scheduling and supervision of the use of overtime.
- Evaluate performance of individuals and employees in cooperation with assigned staff

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for assisting in the supervision and implementation of programs designed for individuals with an intellectual disability.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assists in development and implementation of policies, programs, scheduling and operating procedures;
- Directs, coordinates, evaluates and monitors performance of residential program unit including monitoring staff implementation of individual teaching strategies;
- Confers with staff on routine operational, disciplinary and special problems;
- Evaluates performance of individuals and employees in cooperation with assigned staff;
- Conducts in-service training on intellectual disability practices and procedures and care of individuals;
- Arranges individual search parties and coordinates emergency responses;
- Reviews reports of subordinates and prepares periodic operational reports;
- Makes rounds to ensure units are clean and safe;
- May attend interdisciplinary team and administrative meetings;
- May work with parent and community groups;
- May counsel individuals or employees on problems;
- May interview candidates for position openings;
- May be assigned responsibility for orderly operation of facility on a shift;
- May notify other departments of deficiencies and assist in implementing plans of correction within units;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in the care and supervision of individuals with an intellectual disability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory capacity at the level of a Supervising Developmental Services Worker 1 or 2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training, preferably in an educational, nursing or social science field, may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of two (2) years of college education equalling one (1) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following experience:
- Experience working with individuals who are dually diagnosed with ID/DD and Psychiatric Illness, and may have intermittent behavioral instability.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
- Experience with DDS computer systems; e-CAMRIS, and CORE.
- Experience communicating in written and verbal means with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience working with the modern approaches to working with persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities
- Experience with goals, policies and organization of residential and community support services
- Experience with DDS policies and procedures related to payroll, hiring, purchasing, data collection, and scheduling.
- Experience as a supervisor with responsibility of supervising staff.
- Experience with effectively developing plans to prioritize work and assignments.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class will be required to possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.
