The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications to fill one (1) Accounting Careers Trainee position with a target class of Accountant, in the Bureau of Finance & Administration, providing financial and budget support to the Office of Construction.
It is the DOT's mission to provide a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improves the quality of life and promotes economic vitality for the State and the region.

PROMOTION OPPORTUNITY
As an Accounting Careers Trainee you will be a part of a 1 or 2 year training program depending on your level of education. 
  • The length of the training program is 2 years for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. 
  • The length of the training program is 1 year for individuals with a master’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. 
  • The length of the training program for an individual who earns a master’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification is 1 year from the date the master’s degree is conferred or the end of the original 2-year training period, whichever comes first.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Full Time, 40 hours per week

  • Location: Newington, CT
  • This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy. The Policy can be found HERE. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office.
THE ROLE
In this role, you will:  
  • Provide accounting and budget services to the Office of Construction and the five district offices within the Bureau of Engineering and Construction in support of the Department’s capital program.
  • Perform reviews of monthly billings from consultants and municipalities against contracts and negotiated fee letters.
  • Maintain accounting records and project expenditures.
  • Encumber federal and state funds in Core-CT.
  • Code contracts, create receipts, request audits, and close out projects.
  • Receive training in introductory accounting work to develop skills and knowledge, in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting position.
  • Perform a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period.
  • Examine financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statues, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles.
  • Receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Selection Plan

For current state employees, salary calculations are not necessarily comparable from one of the three branches of state government (i.e. Executive, Legislative, Judicial) to the other.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
  • Experience in Microsoft Office 365 including Excel and Access
  • Experience providing verbal and written communication to vendors, co-workers, 3rd parties
