The State of Connecticut, the Department of  Developmental Services (DDS)- Southbury Training School, currently has two (2) full-time seasonal job opportunities for Maintainer positions located in Southbury, CT.

Position Highlights:
  • Location: Southbury Training School, Southbury, CT.  
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week  
  • Monday - Friday: 7:15am – 3:15pm  Regular Days Off: Saturday & Sunday.
Duration: 
  • This is a seasonal position and will end no later than  November 1, 2023.
      The Role:
      • Job duties include, but are not limited to:
      • Perform grounds keeping duties including cleaning and restocking lavatories, lawn care, trash collection and removal, light repairs, set-up and removal of materials for Camp activities. 
      • Assist Facility Maintenance with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry.
      These are seasonal positions and DDS permanent employees will not be considered for these positions.  

      Selection Plan

      These positions will be filled in accordance with contractual language, reemployment, SEBAC, transfer, promotion and merit employment rules.         PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

        In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

        • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
        • Grounds care;
        • Food services;
        • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
        • Parking garage.

        KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

        • Skills

        MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

        Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

        PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

        Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
        • Experience operating a wide variety of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment (commercial mowers, backhoe, tractors, string trimmers, blowers etc.)
        • Experience with maintenance and grounds keeping. 
        • Experience with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry.
        • Experience working with or volunteering with people with disabilities.
        • Experience  working in a camp, park, or other recreational setting. 

        SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

        Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

        PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

        • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
        • A physical examination may be required.

        WORKING CONDITIONS

        • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
        • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
