The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a current DMHAS employee for the position of Supervising Nurse (PCN 133643) to join our team. The Connecticut Valley Hospital boasts a rich history first opening its doors over 150 years ago in 1868. As the State’s public hospital we provide treatment of mental illness and currently comprised of 18 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford). In our operational framework, recovery is defined as a process of restoring or developing a positive and meaningful sense of identity apart from one’s condition and then rebuilding one’s life in the fullest sense. Recovery is an individualized patient-centered approach. Achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health and wellness is integrated in our recovery approach. Individuals acquire and practice life skills that will assist them in their recovery process.

The General Psychiatric unit specializes in the treatment of patients with a range of serious and persistent mental illnesses and symptoms. The clients are admitted through DMHAS psychiatric and forensic services along with general hospitals and the community.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening.  You must specify your qualifications on your application.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising nursing staff engaged in professional nursing activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, organizes and directs health services for an assigned program, unit(s), facility or geographical area; 
  • Ensures that goals, objectives and work performed are consistent with standards and that quality care is provided to individuals; 
  • Provides clinical guidance to nursing staff;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse in a hospital, regional, institutional or psychiatric setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
  • A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit to practice professional nursing in Connecticut.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
