The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region currently has one seasonal full-time job opportunity for a Waterfront Director - Developmental Services Worker 1 to join our team at Camp Harkness!    

About Us:

Camp Harkness is located in Southeastern Connecticut on the shores of Long Island Sound.  The 102-acre property in Waterford CT is comprised of open and wooded land and includes tidal marsh and beachfront.  Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge, and infirmary.  Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services.        

Key Information:

  • Location: Camp Harkness located in Waterford, CT 
  • 35 hours per week 
  • Schedule: Friday & Saturday: 8:00am – 5:30pm; Sunday: 8:00am - 5:00pm; Thursday: 10:00am - 7:00pm
  • Regular Days Off: Monday - Wednesday  
  • The first 2 weeks may be on a part-time status and may involve availability up until 8:30pm. 
  • The last day of work includes a Saturday to close camp.
  • Salary: $22.84 per hour
  • There are no benefits with this position.
  • This is a seasonal position and will end no later than September 21, 2023.    

These are seasonal positions and DDS permanent employees will not be considered for these positions.

These positions will be filled in accordance with contractual language, reemployment, SEBAC, transfer, promotion and merit employment rules.

This position may be subject to Federal requirements for COVID 19 Vaccination Immunization.

Must be at least 20 years old as of May 19, 2023.    

Applicants must be able to work for the full season and must complete all required DDS training.  

Must be certified in the American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider, American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards, American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Provider or American Safety Health Institute CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid).

Incumbent must be a certified Lifeguard for appointment.

Incumbent must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed.

All certifications must be valid from the beginning to the end of the working period.

Incumbent must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam.

Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle license.

Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers. Must be able to lift and transfer boats and individuals.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training in, then independently implements, policies and procedures designed to achieve objectives of a program for persons with intellectual disabilities; provides assistance and instruction to individuals in activities of daily living; participates in therapeutic programs for development of individuals capabilities; provides guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships; implements individual program plans; participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals; performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment; participates in social and recreational activities; reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable interpersonal skills; ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals; ability to train individuals in self care habits, personal hygiene and proper social conduct; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or training that could be expected to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Waterfront Directory experience.
  • Experience working with or volunteering with people with all types of disabilities.  
  • Experience working with or volunteering in camp or other recreational settings.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain their Medication Certification as   defined by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing Declaratory Ruling – Delegation by Licensed Nurses to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel,; when working in a location that does not have 24 hour nursing care.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
