The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) invites qualified State of Connecticut employees to apply for the position of Material Storage Supervisor 1 in the Office of Inventory Management, Bureau of Finance and Administration located in Old Saybrook, CT.

THE ROLE

This class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor, independently performing a full range of various stores duties, both manual and clerical, such as the receiving, storing, issuing, inspecting, and inventory of stocked commodities and supplies.

DUTIES ALSO INCLUDE

  • Scheduling, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing the work of staff
  • Providing staff training and assistance
  • Conducting performance evaluations
  • Managing human resources (HR) tasks
  • Managing stockroom operation in accordance with industry best practices and CTDOT requirements
  • Establishing and maintaining stock inventory balances
  • Achieving maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence
  • Verifying and inspecting shipments for product quantity and quality
  • Ensuring adequate housekeeping and security of storage areas
  • Maintaining perpetual inventory and related records in accordance with prescribed methods
  • Assisting in annual physical inventory and reconciliation process
  • Purchasing and tracking non-stock commodities for immediate use
  • Managing winter commodities/products off-site
  • Managing a motor vehicle fueling station
  • Acting as liaison with other operating units for customer service and product availability
  • Performing related duties as required
ROLE REQUIREMENTS

While this position is primarily located in Old Saybrook, the incumbent will be required to travel to other locations throughout the state.  Please list your valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of your application.

Incumbents in this position must be willing to accept assignments to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, when required.  Mandatory winter overtime occurs November 1 through April 30 each year.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

This class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor in the operation of a large storeroom or a small warehouse; may supervise a major function of a very large warehouse in a large facility or agency (considering numbers supervised, inventory, and complexity).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans unit workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work; establishes and maintains unit procedures; provides staff training and assistance; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; may make recommendations on policies or standards; may prepare reports and correspondence; depending upon the location of a position, incumbents may perform tasks in one or more of such areas as receiving, shipping, storing, issuing, requisitioning or inventorying; orders supplies and materials from vendors based on prescribed specifications; achieves maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence; inspects for quantity and quality of all incoming supplies; verifies shipments with vendors; insures adequate housekeeping and security of storage areas; operates, maintains and inspects equipment; maintains inventory and makes reports; codes and inventories furniture and equipment; may enter data into a computer; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the principles and procedures of efficient warehousing and material handling including purchasing; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in stock or warehouse work or closely related work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have involved the full range of stores duties, including receiving, storing, issuing, inventorying, inspecting, etc.
Note: For State Employees this is interpreted at or above the level of Storekeeper.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with automotive and heavy equipment parts
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other computerized purchasing and inventory management system
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permit and/or certifications.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION: Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to weather conditions and may be required to handle hazardous materials/chemicals.
