THE ROLE: 
The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is currently seeking a qualified individual for the position of Boiler Tender to join their team.

  • SCHEDULE: Full-Time, 40 hours weekly, 1st Shift, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., every other weekend

ABOUT US:
CVH is Connecticut’s largest free standing public funded provider of inpatient behavioral and substance uses services within DMHAS. CVH is a Joint Commission accredited, 361-bed hospital and opiate treatment provider for adults ages 18 and above. CVH has two campuses; the main campus is centrally located in Middletown, overlooking the beautiful Connecticut River and the satellite Blue Hills campus is located in the north end of our state’s capital. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

This class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks as assigned in the operation, maintenance and repair of boilers and related equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Reads and records readings and conditions of various gauges and indicators having to do with fuel supply, air-fuel mixture, steam pressure, water level, temperatures, etc., and adjusts or takes corrective measures; operates water column and boiler blowoff and the soot blower; inspects oil and gas flames and adjusts or removes and cleans burner nozzles when necessary; lubricates, adjusts and maintains auxiliary boiler equipment including boiler feed pumps and assists in the service and repair of the boilers and auxiliary equipment; inspects heating system for various leaks, flaws and damages and either takes corrective action or reports to superior; may assist in general building maintenance and repair; performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks; adds water treatment chemicals to boilers; may inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations; may remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of boilers and related equipment; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to operate, maintain, and make running repairs to stationary boilers and related equipment; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in oil burner repair, plumbing, boilermaking, steamfitting or refrigerator maintenance, or as a machinist or boiler operator, or work requiring similar mechanical experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with high, medium, and low-pressure steam.
  • Experience with electrical switchgear.  
  • Experience with steamfitting and boiler work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Incumbents may be exposed to significant levels of heat, dust, and noise; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment.
  2. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
