The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division is currently seeking to fill multiple Seasonal Resource Assistant positions at Pachaug State Forest in Voluntown, CT.  

Pachaug State Forest is the largest State Forest in Connecticut encompassing 26,477 acres, in 6 towns -- Voluntown, Sterling, Plainfield, Griswold, North Stonington, and Preston.  The word "Pachaug" is derived from the Native American term meaning bend or turn in the river.  Pachaug River, in the nine miles from its source at Beach Pond to its junction with the Quinebaug River, traverses approximately twice that distance in the course of its various windings and turns.  Pachaug-Great Meadow Swamp was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973 and is considered one of the finest and most extensive Atlantic white cedar swamps in Connecticut.   

This Unit of the CT State Park and Forest System also provides staff support to campgrounds at Green Falls and Mount Misery, as well as other recreation areas.

Positions Include: (see details under Examples of Duties)  
  • Seasonal Park Ranger Supervisor: Assists in the management of seasonal operations and programs in a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor. Minimum Age:  18     
  • Seasonal Park Ranger: Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park. Minimum Age:  18 
  • Seasonal Park Maintenance Supervisor: Assists in the maintenance of a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor and/or an EP Maintainer 3. Minimum Age:  18 
  • Crew Leader: Supervises and works with an assigned crew of Seasonal Maintainers in activities involving the operation and maintenance of DEEP programs and facilities. Minimum Age:  18 
  • Seasonal Maintainer: Performs work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities. Minimum Age:  18 
  • Campground Staff: Provides general campground support services; registers campers; checks in reservations; directs visitors; provides directions; and answers questions about the campground, State camping rules and regulations, campground activities, and the local area. Cleans restrooms, fire pits, grills, other light maintenance tasks throughout campgrounds and forest.  Minimum Age:  18.
    Special Requirements:  Previous retail/customer service experience preferred.   Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-May – Columbus Day.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Schedule: Most positions are typically first shift, but other positions will be second or third shift. Positions are typically 5 days per week and include mandatory weekend shifts.

Anticipated Duration: Start dates vary by position and run through the recreation season, mid-April to mid-October; maximum of 1,030 hours.    

Salary: Depends on relevant education and/or experience. There are no benefits with this position.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

PARK SUPERVISOR (SEASONAL)- Assists in the management and maintenance of seasonal operations and programs in a unit or manages the total operation of a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor. Supervises seasonal employees; keeps time records; evaluates work performance; assists with protective duties as required; may assist in job planning and scheduling; may schedule seasonal employees. Minimum Age: 18   

Seasonal Park Ranger: Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park. Minimum Age:  18

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred applicants will be able to work full-time for the entire recreation season and have related experience or training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
