The Department of Transportation (DOT) invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Material Storage Supervisor 2 in the Office of Inventory Management, Bureau of Finance and Administration located in Waterbury CT.  The position is full-time, 37.5 hours per week with a work schedule of 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday - Friday.

Your Role:
This class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor, independently performing a full range of various stores duties, both manual and clerical, such as the receiving, storing, issuing, inspecting, and inventory of stocked commodities and supplies.  Duties also include:
  • Schedule, assign, oversee, and review the work of staff
  • Provide staff training and assistance; conduct performance evaluations, and manage HR tasks
  • Manage stockroom operation in accordance with industry best practices and CTDOT requirements
  • Establish and maintain stock inventory balances; achieve maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence; verify and inspect shipments for product quantity and quality; ensure adequate housekeeping and security of storage areas
  • Maintain perpetual inventory and related records in accordance with prescribed methods; assist in annual physical inventory and reconciliation process
  • Purchase and track non-stock commodities for immediate use
  • Manage winter commodities/products off-site
  • Manage a motor vehicle fueling station
  • Act as liaison with other operating units for customer service and product availability
Role Requirement:
While this position is primarily located in Waterbury, the incumbent will be required to travel to other locations throughout the state. Possession of a valid drivers license is required.  
Incumbents in this position must be willing to accept assignments to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, when required.  Mandatory winter overtime occurs November 1 through April 30 each year.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

This class is accountable for supervising the operation of a moderate-sized warehouse (considering numbers supervised, inventory and complexity); at the University of Connecticut, acts as the chief assistant to the manager of the central warehouse.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans unit work; establishes and maintains unit procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; performs the more complex tasks of record keeping, inventory control, requisitioning, purchasing, expediting, etc.; consults with others, plans the requisitioning of materials and supplies to achieve maximum turnover rate and control of obsolescence; supervises the receiving, quality and quantity inspection of all incoming supplies; verifies shipments with vendors to expedite deliveries and to process the return of unacceptable materials and supplies; supervises the locating and method of storing of materials and supplies; responsible for the sanitation, housekeeping, and security of storage areas and the maintenance and safety inspection of allied equipment; may place emergency or special orders; may supervise mail or duplicating operations; may be responsible for keeping the inventory of the agency's furniture and equipment; may supervise the storage and control of Federal surplus property; may enter data into a computer; may oversee courier services; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of modern principles and practices of efficient warehousing including purchasing; considerable knowledge of modern techniques of stock record and inventory control; considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes and regulations; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to analyze and forecast requirements and plan maximum turnover rates; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in stock or warehouse work or closely related work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have involved the full range of stores duties, including receiving, storing, issuing, inventorying, inspecting, etc.
Note: For State Employees this is interpreted at or above the level of Storekeeper.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in business administration or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a supervisory role
  • Experience with automotive and heavy equipment parts
  • Experience working in a Warehouse and/or Storeroom
  • Experience with CoreCT or other computerized purchasing and inventory management system
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION: Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to weather conditions and may be required to handle hazardous materials/chemicals.
