The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region currently has one  full-time job opportunities for a Developmental Services Worker 2 based out of the IFS Division, Meriden Respite Center. 

Position Details:
  • Meriden Respite, 35 Undercliff Road, Unit D. Meriden, CT 06450.
  • Full-time, 35 hours per week.
  • First Shift
  • Friday, Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday 6:00am - 2:45pm.
  • However, work schedule flexibility is required in order to meet the demands of the job.
Salary Note: This salary range shall increase effective July 1, 2022.

The Meriden Respite Center, on the Meriden DDS campus, provides time limited respite for individuals supported by the Department. The center is barrier-free and has three bedrooms to accommodate up to five individuals. Two bedrooms are double rooms while the third is a single bedroom. There’s a large living room with an adjoining dining room and eat-in kitchen. The Center is a barrier-free ranch-style home with a large dining area, full kitchen, 4 bedrooms with one being a single room, a living room and a family room.

Meriden Respite Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is available for Individuals supported by DDS across the state. There is access to 24-hour nursing on-site, with the ability to accommodate individuals with medical issues.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening.   • Incumbents must have the ability to be Med. Certified Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle License.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Implements programs and procedures designed to achieve objectives of department in care of individuals with developmental disabilities; provides guidance and instructions to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships; responsible for individuals health and safety; implements individual program plans; reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques; participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals to individuals; performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment for individuals; may lead and participate in social and recreational activities designed to develop individual potential; may act as shift charge; may attend interdisciplinary team meetings; may evaluate performance of subordinate staff; may provide orientation and basic inservice training to subordinate staff; may participate in special programs designed to fully develop potential of individuals; may administer first aid in emergency situations; may administer selected oral medications; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of fundamentals of hygiene and physical training; knowledge of safety, fire and first aid procedures; basic knowledge of interdisciplinary process for development of individual programs; considerable interpersonal skills; basic oral and written communication skills; skill in behavior management of individuals; ability to recognize and report behavioral change; ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals; ability to lead and participate in recreational and occupational activities; ability to follow oral and written instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the care and supervision of individuals with developmental disabilities at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 1 (or equivalent experience in a human service field).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience communicating verbally and in writing to diverse populations and skill levels.
  • Experience using computer software systems including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience working with individuals who have significant behavioral and psychiatric diagnosis.
  • Experience working in a respite center.
  • Charge or lead experience while at DDS.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Medication Administration Certification from the Department of Developmental Services.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
