We are currently seeking a Medical Director for our General Psychiatry Division to join our passionate team! 

We seek an experienced and qualified individual for a meaningful role as a DMHAS Medical Division Director at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) within the General Psychiatry Division (GPD).  This role will report to the Chief Medical Officer and provide direct administrative and clinical supervision to the psychiatrists and psychiatric APRNs of GPD, along with providing clinical oversight of the interdisciplinary treatment teams.  This position is located centrally at 1000 Silver Street in Middletown, CT. This is a full-time, 1st shift, 40 hours per week position, with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The position number is 126999.



GPD provides recovery oriented inpatient treatment services to a diverse client patient population throughout the state.  In addition to the general psychiatry units, there are three units providing specialized program service areas: Young Adult Services (YAS) Unit, Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury (ABI) Unit as well as several units servicing the Older Adult population. Admissions to GPD are facilitated by our Centralized Admission Department. Referrals are made through the appropriate LMHA and screened in the Admissions Office. The Admissions Office works closely with the Office of the Commissioner to best meet the needs of all referrals.
   

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer in development, implementation, and evaluation of agency-wide policies, goals, and objectives;
  • Be responsible for coordination of accreditation activities;
  • Serve as agency liaison with external medical, behavioral health planning, advisory groups, courts, and other state medical and service agencies;
  • Participate in quality assurance studies and investigations; 
  • Develop processes and practices to improve quality and cost of patient care; 
  • Conduct critical incident reviews;
  • Chair and/or participate in any risk management committee such as Division Review Committee;
  • Manage the acuity of the patients within GPD; 
  • Conduct oversight of patients on Special Observation ensuring patient safety;
  • Consult on high-risk patients and follow-up on their progress; 
  • Attend and participate in case conferences chaired by the DMHAS Medical Director; and
  • Assess and treat patients when necessary.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Connecticut Valley Hospital, this class is accountable for administering agency medical, clinical and behavioral health services programs and operations, within a division.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Directs staff, services, and programs of a designated hospital, facility, regional medical area or behavioral health program; develops, implements, and evaluates policies, goals, and objectives to ensure conformance with agency mission, goals, objectives, and statutory provisions; assists in development of programs and activities including development of medical service standards and criteria; implements new procedures and procedural revisions; determines or assists in determination of appropriate staffing levels and directs or assists in management and coordination of staff; implements staff performance review standards; maintains contact with individuals both within and outside of agency who might impact on programs and services; administers state and federal regulations pertaining to medical and psychiatric health care programs, services, and operations; participates on various committees and boards; may testify in court as needed; may conduct training; may assist agency medical director in development, implementation, and evaluation of agency wide policies, goals, and objectives; may be responsible for coordination of accreditation activities; may serve as agency liaison with external medical, behavioral health planning, advisory groups, courts, and other state medical and service agencies; may monitor contracts with medical services vendors; may participate in quality assurance studies and investigations; may develop processes and practices to improve quality and cost of patient care; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques; considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and issues of medicine and psychiatry with particular reference to diagnosis and treatment of behavioral health patients; considerable knowledge of recent developments in the field of psychiatry and medicine; knowledge of administration and clinical operations, functions, and systems involving medical service delivery; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable organizational skills; considerable analytical skills; ability to teach and provide clinical supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Experience in a hospital, clinic or correctional facility as a board certified psychiatrist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must possess a license to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut.
  2. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain certification as a specialist in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  3. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. 1320a-7b(f).
  4. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain certification as a specialist in an area such as geriatrics, ABI/TBI, forensics, substance abuse, etc.
  5. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a faculty appointment at either the Yale School of Medicine or the UCONN School of Medicine.
  6. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess appropriate current licenses, certifications or permits.
  7. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual.
