DAS, Division of Construction Services - Office of the State Building Inspector, is currently accepting applications for Boiler Inspector.

Position Details: 
The Bureau of Boilers within the Office of the State Building Inspector is responsible for administration and enforcement of the Connecticut Safety Code for Boilers and Hot Water Heaters. This position will be responsible for performing inspections for boilers that are not inspected by insurance companies.

This position is based out of the team's main office at 450 Columbus Boulevard in Hartford and will perform boiler inspections throughout Connecticut. Within the 40-hour work week, a flex-schedule is available. 

You will have the opportunity to:
Performs internal and external inspections of boilers; witnesses hydrostatic tests on boilers; examines piping systems; inspects for presence of cracked, burned or bagged tubes; examines boiler accessories; inspects repairs and replacements of steam boilers; consults with boiler repairers and approves type of repairs to be made; writes reports and recommends abatements; testifies at hearings and in court; may collect overdue fees for boiler operating certificates; performs related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the State Building Inspector, this class is accountable for inspecting steam boilers for compliance with state laws, codes and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs internal and external inspections of boilers; witnesses hydrostatic tests on boilers; examines piping systems; inspects for presence of cracked, burned or bagged tubes; examines boiler accessories; inspects repairs and replacements of steam boilers; consults with boiler repairers and approves type of repairs to be made; writes reports and recommends abatements; testifies at hearings and in court; may collect overdue fees for boiler operating certificates; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of methods and procedures used in manufacture and operation of all types of riveted and welded steam boilers; knowledge of relevant state laws, statutes, regulations and American Society of Mechanical Engineers codes; knowledge of inspection methods and techniques; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to compute allowable pressure and strength requirements using standard formulas; ability to read technical drawings, designs and specifications; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of steam boilers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in mechanical engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

(1) Experience performing boiler inspections on behalf of an insurance company.
(2) Experience with the Jurisdiction Online inspection software.
(3) Experience investigating matters involving boilers, hot water heaters and other pressure vessels.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must possess at time of appointment and maintain during employment a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors or a current Connecticut license in one of the following categories: S-1, S-2, S-3, or S-4.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions and some risk of injury.
