Engineer Intern (35 Hour)

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH) is hiring! We are seeking an individual for an Engineer Intern position. This Engineer Intern position will work in the Environmental Health and Drinking Water Branch's Drinking Water Section. This Engineer Intern will receive training under direction of a supervisor or senior staff person for a period of one year before being promoted to the target class of Sanitary Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.

This Engineer Intern position is in the Small Systems and Schools Program within the Environmental Health and Drinking Water Branch. The selected candidate will be tasked with critical core functions of Connecticut’s drinking water primacy program as it relates to drinking water issues in schools. The DPH has primacy to uphold the Safe Drinking Water Act and oversee various state laws that assure purity and adequacy of the state’s public drinking water systems and sources and the EHDW Branch regulates approximately 2,400 public water systems that provide safe drinking water to over 2.8 million people in the State of Connecticut. Additionally, the EHDW Branch oversees activities related to food protection, private wells, subsurface sewage disposal, lead, radon, asbestos and over 15 environmental licensing and certification categories.  

This Engineer Intern position will be responsible for duties that will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Enhance response to drinking water issues in schools undergoing construction projects through coordination and technical assistance
  • Provide direct sanitary engineering technical assistance for school water system projects
  • Work to assure effective project management and application of public drinking water regulations for school projects, to address Safe Drinking Water Act requirements
  • Utilize the School Sanitary Survey Reports to address aging drinking water infrastructure for schools that are public water systems
  • Coordinate assistance effort on behalf of in schools undergoing construction projects, including bridged communication with Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Program, State Department of Education as applicable, Department of Administrative Services, and other potential stakeholders including School leadership such as the Town CEO, School Boards, and Superintendents
  • Continue to enhance partnership efforts with CT Rural Water & Wastewater, Connecticut Water and Wastewater Association, Local Health Departments, Water Utility Coordinating Committees etc.
  • Provide technical assistance to school system owners and certified operators regarding violations, water quality or quantity concerns, aging infrastructure, understanding regulations and requirements, etc

*Please Note:Upon initial entry to this class, incumbents will be placed in Pay Plan ES 18, step 5. Upon successful completion of one year in this class, incumbents will be placed in Salary Group ES 18, step 7.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree in the discipline required by the target class.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in engineering or academic coursework in drinking water treatment, drinking water distribution systems, drinking water quality or source water protection
  • Experience working with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements and Drinking Water System design technical standards
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience working collaboratively with others in a workplace or in an academic setting
  • Experience using organizational skills to monitor and track multiple on-going assignments
