The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has three openings to hire Engineer Interns within the Water Planning and Management Division’s (WPMD) of the Bureau of Water Protection & Land Reuse (WPLR).

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

These positions will be based at the 79 Elm Street, Hartford, CT office, across from the historical Bushnell Park. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position with a first shift schedule, Monday through Friday with hybrid scheduling flexibility.

Within the Bureau of Water Protection & Land Reuse (WPLR), the Water Planning and Management Division’s (WPMD) mission is to monitor, assess, and restore the water quality of Long Island Sound, streams, rivers, and lakes and provide adequate instream water quantity for current and future generations. Programs revolve around state and federal programs for water quality and water quantity in our streams, rivers, lakes, and the Long Island Sound and its embayments.


WHAT WE DO

DEEP's Municipal Wastewater Program in the Water Planning and Management Division is responsible for an array of duties, including:

  • Providing guidance, funding, support, and regulatory oversight to municipalities regarding all aspects of domestic wastewater discharged to Connecticut waterbodies.
  • Administering the technical components of the Clean Water Fund, from planning the required infrastructure, through design and providing construction oversight.
  • Certifying the qualifications of wastewater treatment operators in the state, as well as the classification of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Drafts and issues National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits to domestic wastewater treatment facilities, which protect waterbodies throughout Connecticut, done on behalf of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

YOUR ROLE

Engineer Interns receive training under direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year before being promoted to the target class of Sanitary Engineer 1, upon successful completion of the training period. This position provides a unique opportunity to join a team committed to ensuring public health and safety and protecting the environment.

As a trainee, interns will assist with:

  • The review of engineering systems, learn to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and regulations;
  • Assist with emergency planning and storm response,
  • Provide technical assistance to municipalities and the general public;
  • Protect public health and safety and the environment through ensuring appropriate and adequate treatment of wastewater.

Candidates with Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering degrees, including upcoming May 2022 graduates, are encouraged to apply.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree in the discipline required by the target class.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience or knowledge of principles, practices and methods of wastewater treatment and conveyance systems;
  • Experience or knowledge with reading, interpreting or using engineering reports, plan and specifications, environmental data tables or graphs;
  • Experience communicating technical information to various audiences;
  • Experience in prioritizing and tracking competing activities/projects to meet deadlines;
  • Experience or training in preparing technical reports;
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
