The duty station of these positions is DEEP Marine Headquarters located at 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT, and the main worksite of these positions is located in Danbury, CT, however, the job duties are field-oriented and duty stations are throughout the state and work may begin in field locations.
Boating Education Assistants visit state boat launches to educate boaters about clean and safe boating practices, conduct voluntary Vessel Safety Checks and Aquatic Invasive Species inspections and report the overall boat launch condition to Boating Division staff.
The length of the BEA position is from May 15 to October 15, 40 hours per week with the possibility of work hours varying daily. The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday with some evening and weekend work required.
The pay rate varies from $13.00 to $17.00 per hour depending on education and experience. There are no benefits provided.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
are responsible for the duties listed below:
Interacting with and educating boaters at boat launches throughout the state
about clean and safe boating practices including pumpout locations, Aquatic
Invasive Species information, No Discharge Areas, safety equipment and life
Conducting vessel safety checks as developed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary;
Encouraging people to become Clean Boaters by having them sign the Clean Boater
Pledge and discussing the Clean Boater Action Guide;
Closing the parking lot if it becomes full;
Reporting the condition of the boat launch;
Light maintenance at the boat launch;
Submitting weekly summaries detailing the use of the boat launch;
Assisting with public outreach events, as needed; and
Other duties, as assigned.
BEAs will receive training in all of the duties listed above. The BEAs will be
divided into three specialized teams- education based, launch management,
aquatic invasive species outreach.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Ability to follow instructions.
1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.
b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.
c. College training in a specific field.
d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.
1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
