The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), Bureau of Finance and Administration, Division of Business Services seeks a qualified individual for the position of Maintainer in the Motor Pool in Newington.

JOB HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Monday-Friday
  • 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including overtime and snow and ice removal, occurring between November 1 through April 30 each year

  • The entry level rate for this class will be ten (10%) percent below Step 1 of the salary grade. Upon completion of the initial working test period the incumbent’s salary will be adjusted to the TC pay plan, Step 1 of the salary grade for this class
In this role, you will be performing duties associated with the daily operations of DOT’s Motor Pool unit; fuel station attendant; record keeping; report preparation; vehicle transport. This position will also be required to assist in the Support Services Operations as needed (Mail Room, Records Retention unit, etc.) which includes, but is not limited to, picking up, sorting and distributing mail, preparing items to be shipped; assisting with relocating boxes of files, performing related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

- building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial)
- grounds care
- food services
- operation of trucks of less than five ton capacity
- parking garage

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Keeps simple records and prepares reports (this should be related to duties listed previously and not a full-time office record keeping position); performs related duties as required.

MOTOR EQUIPMENT SERVICES
Operates motor vehicles of less than a five ton capacity for messenger service, delivery service, stock work, grounds maintenance and the like; loads and unloads vehicles; maintains vehicles in good condition including cleaning, lubrication and preventive maintenance; keeps records in connection with vehicles or materials carried; supplies motor vehicles with gas, oil, water and other fluids; loads and unloads vehicles; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn policies and procedures; ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; some ability in simple record keeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with basic record keeping skills to be used for items such as recording fuel tank readings, maintaining vehicle files, and tracking preventive maintenance on vehicles
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook 
  • Experience creating spreadsheets, data entry, and data sort in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with communicating effectively with internal and external customers
  • Experience in snow and ice removal
  • Experience working in an independent work environment with minimal supervision

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
