The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is currently seeking Correctional Stores Supervisor(s) to join our team in our northern region warehouse(s) located in Somers and Enfield, CT!

Position Highlights: 

The fiscal department currently has Store Supervisors in warehouses located in the Osborn Correctional Institution and on the grounds of Robinson Correctional Institution. 

The incumbent will work out of the warehouse(s), but will travel throughout the state delivering product and uniforms from those locations to each and every DOC facility. 

This position is full-time, Monday to Friday, first shift, working 36.25 hours per week. 

Selected candidates will be required to attend a 12 week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for supervising either the entire small to moderate function as a working supervisor or for running one or several phases of a large stores function as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

At a large institution performs one or several of such phases of stores function as requisitioning food, materials and supplies, receiving, inspecting and storing incoming goods, supplying clothing to Correction Officers and to about-to-be-released inmates, maintaining inventories and making reports thereon and securing against pilferage, vandalism, food spoilage, vermin and inmate disturbances; at a smaller institution is responsible for entire stores function, participating in one or more phases of work; trains and supervises inmates assigned to stores function; maintains discipline and completes reports on inmates’ behavior, training, progress, etc.; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of handling and storing food, supplies and equipment; knowledge of stock keeping and recording methods and procedures; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to audit stock accounts; ability to analyze requirements and requisition supplies for future use; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to instruct inmates; ability to work under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in stock or warehouse work or closely related work that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will possess:
  • Experience in a warehouse setting; 
  • Experience working with loss prevention standards; 
  • Experience in inventory control; 
  • Experience working in customer service and resolving customer issues; 
  • Experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing with diverse populations; 
  • Experience working with basic computer programs. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  2. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates.
