The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications for an exciting Ferry First Mate opportunity within the Bureau of Public Transportation for the Rocky Hill/Glastonbury Ferry. It is the DOT's mission to provide a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improves the quality of life and promotes economic vitality for the State and the region.

The Role/Requirements: 
  • You must possess a valid/current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B, with a Tank (N) Endorsement and Medical Examiners Card (MEC). Please indicate your license number, issuing state, and expiration date in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application.  
  • You must hold/retain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate and have first aid knowledge. Please indicate your CPR license number in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application.

  • This position is full time, 37.5 hours/week. The shifts will vary from week to week. 1st shift is from 6:30am to 2:00pm and 2nd shift is from 12:30pm to 8:00pm. Every other weekend you will be required to work from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
  • You will work under the direction of a Ferry Captain and be accountable for performing highly skilled duties in more than one trade area.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation, this class is accountable for assisting a Ferry Captain in the operation, repair and maintenance of a Connecticut State Ferry vessel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Ensures proper boarding and exiting of passengers and vehicles from ferry vessel under mandated state and federal safety regulations that pertain to passenger carrying vessels; handles mooring lines and landing aprons; collects tolls and makes out collection reports; maintains vessel, decks, approach aprons in a neat and orderly condition; assists Ferry Captain with monitoring of river for boats and other traffic in ferry's path; fuels ferry and changes oil and transmission fluid; ensures ramps, towers and gates properly oiled and greased; assists with required repairs, replacements and maintenance to ferry vessel and equipment in order to put vessel in first class condition prior to United States Coast Guard inspections as required by federal regulations; operates ferry vessel on an as-needed basis; may be assigned other duties in regular or emergency highway and/or airport maintenance; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of mechanical and operational aspects of ferry vessels up to 100 tons; some knowledge of maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines; some knowledge of tools and methods used in maintenance of marine vessels and equipment; interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; some ability to utilize computer software; some mathematical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in the basic operation, repair and maintenance of marine or automotive equipment and propulsion motors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience assisting Vessel Captains in a First Mate capacity. 
  • Experience working in accordance with State and Federal safety regulations pertaining to passenger carrying vessels.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
2. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, noise and fumes and risk of injury from equipment.
