The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) is recruiting for a part-time (34 hours per week) State School Art Teacher, located at our Albert J. Solnit South Campus, 915 River Road, Middletown, CT 06457.

The work schedule is: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: 7:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.
Thursday and Friday: 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

In this position you will make a difference by:
  • Working extensively with teachers and administration to help students improve their learning skills.
  • Providing specific strategies for teaching and supporting students with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers as well as support staff, monitor student progress, and administer assessments as necessary.
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate that they have the following:
Certification in Art and State Department of Education Endorsement Code 042 PK-12.

The Albert J. Solnit Children's Center is part of the Department of Children and Families, widely recognized as a center of excellence for family-centered treatment of children and youth with serious emotional disturbances. This state-administered Psychiatric facility provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents under the age of eighteen, with severe mental illness and related behavioral and emotional problems who cannot be safely assessed or treated in a less restrictive setting. The South Campus consists of four co-ed hospital units and three female adolescent psychiatric residential treatment facility cottages (PRTF).

Our 67-acre campus is centrally located in Middletown, Connecticut overlooking the Connecticut River. The Solnit Center facilities support our dedication to helping youth improve their individual and social competencies. The campus includes: two schools, an indoor pool, playgrounds, a ball field, two gyms, recreation rooms and an outdoor picnic area. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district, teaches appropriate early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subjects and/or special education curricula to individuals enrolled in departmental education programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Teaches early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject and/or special education curricula; develops educational plans for individuals and groups material level to students ability; sets short and long term goals and evaluates progress of students; participates in planning team meetings and case review conferences assessing student behavior; may hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student's performance; relates to professionals in ancillary educational roles; maintains student records and writes reports; performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education and teaching; knowledge of the principles and practices of education for special needs population; knowledge of student program needs and goal setting; ability to motivate students; ability to communicate at the appropriate level; ability to establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in work; ability to prepare written reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Experience working with students and a variety of disciplines in a hospital setting
  • Experience working with different types of learning styles of students and ability to teach to all levels.
  • Experience with classroom routines.
  • Experience communicating effectively across all levels of the organization as well with internal and external partners
  • Experience working in a fast paced, multifaceted environment.
  • Follows class schedule as provided by school administration understanding that it may change unexpectedly.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
