The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT), is now accepting applications for an exciting Transportation Supervisor (Bridge Maintenance) role in Torrington, CT. This role is full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm. It is the DOT's mission to provide a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improves the quality of life and promotes economic vitality for the State and the region.

Requirements:
  • You must hold residency within 30-miles of the job location (Torrington). 
  • You must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B, with "tank endorsement," and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC). Be sure to indicate your license number in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application.  
  • Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid CDL Class A or B, reflecting "tank endorsement" and their valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at the time of interview.

  • Various storm events will require employees to be at work prior, during, and after a storm or weather event. Which at times could be up to period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
  • You must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever your services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for supervising the work of crews engaged in a phase of highway operations or maintenance as indicated by the parenthetical title of the class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Supervises rigging of staging, cleaning and painting of metal, replacement of bridge timber, building and demolition of temporary wooden structures, gunite repairs, pouring and surfacing of concrete, drilling of concrete on stone and driving or removal of rivets; supervises electric or acetylene welding and cutting, repairs to gears, shafts, bearings and other mechanical parts of a drawbridge and other equipment used in bridge work; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans crews work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; monitors use of equipment, materials, supplies and contractual services; maintains cost records; maintains necessary precautions for safety of employees and the public; supervises snow and ice work; requisitions supplies and materials; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to maintain moveable and stationary bridges; ability in use and maintenance of small tools and equipment used in bridge repairs and maintenance; considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of safety precautions; considerable knowledge of winter road maintenance; some knowledge of first aid; some knowledge of personnel rules; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the field indicated by the parenthetical title.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using approved methods of maintain and improving bridges and related structures. 
  • Experience using materials and equipment to maintain and perform construction on bridges.  
  • Experience with layout, supervising, and inspecting bridge maintenance projects. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory, acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.

2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to extremes of weather conditions, frequent lifting of heavy weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months and loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
