We are the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The agency operates 14 correctional facilities and has its headquarters located in Wethersfield, CT. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming. The agency is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by DOC. We also provide supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs. 

Your Impact

As a Vocational Instructor within the Unified System, the incumbent will prioritize safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens and offenders.  The incumbent will have the opportunity to teach Computer Technology curricula; develop educational plans for individuals and groups; set short and long term goals and evaluate student progress; participate in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior.  Additional opportunities to hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance; relate to professionals in ancillary educational roles; maintain student records; write reports and model best teaching practices.

Position Details

This position is full time (35 hour/week), Monday through Friday, 1st shift.

The objective of the Computer Technology class is to enable the participant to leave with skills which will allow them to become employable, and a productive member of the community in which they live. This class entails learning Microsoft Word, Publisher, Power Point, Excel and Access as well as computer concepts. As a Computer Technology Instructor you will be responsible for educating the class on:

  • Desktop Publishing
  • Integration of Applications
  • Personal Finance Software
  • Presentation Manager

  • This position may require you to prepare a lesson plan presentation as part of the interview process.
  • Candidates selected for this position will be required to attend a ten (10) week Department of Correction Training Academy.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction School District vocational education section and the Department of Children and Families, Connecticut Juvenile Training School this class provides instruction and supervision in vocational and occupational subjects to a group of inmates and/or residents.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans and conducts a vocational program in accordance with curriculum established for vocational education developed under guidelines established by the State Department of Education-Division of Vocational Education; conducts classes and shop sessions in vocational and occupational subjects; corrects papers and tests; counsels inmates and/or students and gives individual instruction; maintains tools and equipment; attends staff and other professional meetings; prepares reports on inmates and/or students as required; performs all the security functions necessary to maintain safety of inmates and/or students, associates and other members of the institution populations; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of educational principles, methods and techniques; skill in a particular trade or occupation; teaching ability; ability to work effectively with inmates and/or students; ability to express ideas simply and clearly, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

High School graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the subject field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Incumbents in this class must meet the State Board of Education requirements to receive initial educator certificate to teach Vocational Education.
Note: *Payment for employees on the extended schedule will be determined by the appropriate contract

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a leadership or training capacity
  • Experience working in an institution setting
  • Posses a Technology Education, PK-12 (#047) endorsement
  • Posses a Comprehensive Special Education K-12 (#165) with an External Diploma and Noncredit Mandated Programs endorsement
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
