The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC), is looking to hire a Mail Handler at Cheshire Correctional Institution.

JOB DETAILS
This is a full-time, 37.5 hour-per-week position on first shift. Schedule is Monday-Friday from 7:00am-3:00pm. The position is located at Cheshire Correctional Institution in Cheshire, CT.

Key responsibilities of this position include:
  • Inspecting inmate mail and parcels for contraband and generating rejection notifications
  • Communicating with inmates about their mail, books, newspapers and parcels
  • Communicating with inmate family members about mail, books, etc.
  • Maintaining legal logs, parcel logs, and other records as necessary

The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, humane, and provide re-entry programming.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weighs and stamps postaged, franked or metered mail; drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; signs for insured, certified, registered and special delivery mail; updates and maintains records; may maintain daily cash records; schedules vehicle maintenance; provides postal service assistance to customers; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; some oral and written communication skills; some interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to utilize computer software; ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; some mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a correctional setting
  • Experience working collaboratively with other staff members
  • Experience recognizing safety and security concerns in a correctional institution
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access to fill out forms, enter data, and complete legal mail logs

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
