The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region currently has four (4) seasonal full-time job opportunities for a Maintainer to join our team at Camp Harkness.         

Camp Harkness is located in Southeastern Connecticut on the shores of Long Island Sound.  The 102-acre property in Waterford CT is comprised of open and wooded land and includes tidal marsh and beachfront.  Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge, and infirmary.  Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services  

Key Information:

  • Location: Camp Harkness located in Waterford, CT. 
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week.  
  • Work Schedule:  
  • Schedule One:  Sun/Mon/Tues/Weds/Thurs - 7:00am to 3:30pm, Days Off: Fri/Sat.
  • Schedule Two: Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues – 10:00am to 6:30pm, Days Off: Wed/Thurs.
  • Schedule Three: Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat – 7:00am to 3:30pm, Days Off: Sun/Mon.
  • Schedule Four: Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues/Wed – 7:00am to 3:30pm, Days Off: Thurs/Fri. 
  • Salary: $17.17 per hour. There are no benefits with this position.
  • Duration: Position will end no later than November 4, 2021.
  • Requirement: Must have a valid Driver’s License.  

The incumbents will perform grounds keeping duties including cleaning and restocking lavatories, lawn care, trash collection and removal, light repairs, set-up and removal of materials for Camp activities and will assist Facility Maintenance with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry.   

These are seasonal positions and DDS permanent employees will not be considered for these positions.

Selected candidates must possess sufficient strength and physical agility to perform heavy physical labor and work well with other staff and campers. Must have the ability to: understand and follow oral and written instruction; work for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather; must have experience operating a wide variety of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment (commercial mowers, tractors, string trimmers, blowers etc.)

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

- building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial)
- grounds care
- food services
- operation of trucks of less than five ton capacity
- parking garage

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This position will be responsible for:

  • Grounds keeping duties including cleaning and restocking lavatories;
  • Lawn care;
  • Trash collection and removal;
  • Light repairs;
  • Set-up and removal of materials for Camp activities;
  • Assist Facility Maintenance with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry;
  • Also perform related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn policies and procedures; ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; some ability in simple record keeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:  

  • Experience operating a wide variety of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment (commercial mowers, tractors, string trimmers, blowers etc.).
  • Maintenance and grounds keeping experience.
  • Basic plumbing, electric and carpentry experience.
  • Experience working with or volunteering with people with disabilities.
  • Experience working in a camp, park or other recreational setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
