Lead Developmental Services Worker (35 Hour)

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – West Region seeks three qualified individuals for the position of Lead Developmental Services Worker for our Lower Fairfield County Regional Center (LFC) located at 146 Silvermine Avenue in Norwalk, CT.  

These are full time, 35 hours per week with schedule as follows:  

PCN 018392 Building 3 K/L:

  • Week One: Friday, Wednesday & Thursday 2:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday & Sunday 1:00pm – 9:00pm (Regular Days Off Monday & Tuesday) – 40 hours.  
  • Week Two: Friday, Monday & Tuesday 2:00pm – 10:00pm, Wednesday 2:00pm – 8:00pm (Regular Days Off Saturday, Sunday & Thursday) – 30 hours.  
  • However, must be flexible to meet the needs of the agency.   

PCN 018440 Building 1 C/D:

  • Week One: Friday, Monday & Tuesday 1:00pm – 9:00pm, Wednesday 2:00pm – 8:00pm (Regular Days Off Saturday & Sunday) – 30 hours.  
  • Week Two: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday & Thursday 1:00pm – 9:00pm (Regular Days Off Monday & Tuesday) – 40 hours.  
  • However, must be flexible to meet the needs of the agency.   

PCN 018451 Building 2 E/F:

  • Week One: Friday, Monday & Tuesday 1:00pm – 9:00pm, Wednesday 2:00pm – 8:00pm (Regular Days Off Saturday & Sunday) – 30 hours.  
  • Week Two: Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Thursday 1:00pm – 9:00pm, Wednesday 1:15pm – 9:15pm (Regular Says Off Monday & Tuesday) – 40 hours.  
  • However, must be flexible to meet the needs of the agency.

*For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period.  For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as a working lead or as a backup to the Supervising Developmental Services Worker in the shift supervision of a work location.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Leads Developmental Services Workers on an assigned shift in implementation of residential living program for individuals in a cottage, wing or other living quarter; oversees and may participate in general care of assigned living quarters and care, feeding, clothing and treatment of individuals; directs and advises staff on implementation of individuals daily teaching strategies; assists in evaluating performance of residential program within living quarters; confers daily with staff on routine operational, disciplinary and special problems; implements policies, programs and operational procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations and with regard to needs of individuals; participates in caring for and instruction of individuals in their activities of daily living; confers with parents concerning individuals status; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; may complete a variety of reports, notes, logs, requisitions, etc.; may design and write residential living programs; may provide orientation and in-service training to subordinate staff; may order, secure and distribute supplies and equipment for program functioning and individuals personal needs; may attend interdisciplinary team meetings; may arrange for appropriate support services such as housekeeping, maintenance and laundry; may administer first aid in emergency situations; may drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings; may serve as backup for Supervising Developmental Services Worker; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of modern methods of working with individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities; knowledge of rehabilitative and interdisciplinary process; knowledge of goals, policies and organization of a residential living unit; knowledge of safety, fire and first aid procedures; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to implement policies and operational procedures; ability to lead staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities at the level of Developmental Services Worker 2.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:    

  • Experience with medically involved people and/or people with Behavioral challenges.  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties. Applicants may be required to take a physical examination.

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals and may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
