The CAA is now accepting applications for a full-time, first shift Transportation Maintainer 1 at Bradley International Airport, located in Windsor Locks, CT.  The schedule for this position is Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm with a ½ hour unpaid meal period.  Schedule assignment is based upon CAA operating needs and seniority, and subject to reassignment as needs change.

This 37.5 hours per week position is responsible for performing a full range of grounds, equipment, and facilities duties.  Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal and glycol recovery when those services are needed.  The airport is staffed 7 days a week.  Overtime work is required on nights, holidays and weekends.  There is mandatory winter overtime from November 1st through April 30th, and snow removal can last for several days and nights.  Airport safety and security are a priority.  

This position offers a full benefit package, including health insurance and a retirement plan. The starting hourly salary is $21.86/hour and is non-negotiable.

In order to be eligible to apply applicants must hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate at the time of application, and both must be kept current as a condition of employment with the CAA. 

 

Requirements of the position:

An individual serving in this position must be able to successfully undergo a thorough background and security screening, physical examination including pre-employment drug screening, fingerprinting and maintain required security clearance during the duration of employment. Incumbents in this class must obtain Bradley movement area certification, allowing them to independently operate vehicles and equipment on Airfield movement areas while effectively communicating with Air Traffic Control for proper clearance. Movement area certification must be maintained during the duration of employment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of State roadside, roadways, bridges, airports and other departmental facilities; operates and maintains small and less complex mechanical equipment or acts as a helper on larger and more complex equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some knowledge of the physical properties of standard highway or airport construction and maintenance materials; some knowledge of some mechanical principles; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; familiarity with the basic practices of the construction and maintenance trades; ability to use and make minor repairs to small tools and the simpler mechanical equipment; ability to operate equipment listed on the attached addendum; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will have working experience in an airport environment, experience operating equipment, good mechanical skills, snow removal operation experience, experience with snow blowers, brooms and large snow plows and knowledge of radio monitoring and communications. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
2. Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
2. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
