The fast-paced MIS unit at the State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is looking for a motivated technical support professional to join our IT Technical Support team.

An Information Technology Technician will serve as a member of a technical support team assisting computer users with PC and network problems, software installation, PC & Laptop setups, printer installations, network printer configurations, and data back-up and restore functions.

The position is based in our centralized technical support team providing service to over 4,000 computer users at more than 16 locations throughout the state. The individual would also be assigned to work on-site network and PC upgrades at various prisons and offices throughout the state at times.

Employee's main office location is in Wethersfield, CT. This IT Tech position is full time, on a first shift schedule.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic technical work involving infrastructure systems support in an Information Technology (IT) environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Provide support to agency staff in the following areas: application software, network communications, electronic mail, and internet web browsing and connectivity.
  • Perform PC imaging, network printer and scanner configuration and similar tasks.
  • Perform directory services administration (user access rights, password resets, etc.)
  • Maintain tickets and detailed documentation for all network and user issues.
  • Maintain inventory logs for equipment entering or leaving the IT area.
  • Maintain network tape-backup system.
  • Resolve hardware compatibility problems.
  • Troubleshoot software and operating system issues.
  • Perform more complex network tasks under the direction of higher level network team members.
  • Utilize remote desktop software or on-site visits to user workstations to provide Help Desk support to the users.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of functioning and use of information systems and technology; knowledge of IT equipment; knowledge of help desk management tools and utilities; knowledge of computer operations and methods of preparing work for processing; knowledge of data control functions specific to job stream maintenance and documentation; basic knowledge of concepts of network and microcomputer operating systems; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; technical problem solving skills; logic and analytical skills; ability to install and maintain microcomputer hardware, software and basic network components; ability to analyze and troubleshoot simple operational and data communications problems; ability to prepare and maintain records, logs and reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in information technology (IT) operations support or another IT related support area.

NOTE: For State employees this is interpreted at the level of Data Processing Operations Support Specialist 1.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. College training in management information systems, computer science or information technology related area may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling six (6) months of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

2. For State employees one (1) year as an Information Technology Technician Trainee may be substituted for the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with User Support in a network environment;
  • Experience troubleshooting user hardware, software and operating system issues;
  • Experience with a network operating system, current Microsoft Office products, Windows 7, Windows 10 and email products;
  • Experience with Active Directory or Novell NetWare;
  • Holds a current and valid Motor Vehicle License.
