The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - North Region has one seasonal job opening for a Developmental Services Worker 1 - Boating Director at Camp Quinebaug!

Camp Quinebaug provides a unique summer day camp experience for approximately 100 school aged children with developmental disabilities in northeastern Connecticut. Children with intellectual disabilities and autism are the primary population served at this camp. The camp is located on Wauregan Reservoir in Killingly on 11 acres, and our waterfront is the only beach on this beautiful waterway. Arts and crafts, sports, nature activities, music, swimming, boating, and fishing are some of the highlights of the daily camp schedule.

JOB DETAILS
The Boating Director works under the general direction of the Camp and Waterfront Directors and is responsible for the overall safety and supervision of all boating program activities at Camp Quinebaug. This position will assist the Camp Director in organizing, planning, and managing a comprehensive summer boating program and related activities.

The Boating Director monitors activities in boating/swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to campers and staff engaged in aquatic activities. 

KEY INFORMATION:
  • Location: Camp Quinebaug in Killingly, CT.
  • Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 2:30 pm.
  • The first two weeks are part-time and may involve availability up until 8:30 pm. The last day of work is a Saturday in which staff assists in the closing of the camp.
  • Salary: $21.74 per hour. There are no benefits with this position. 
  • Duration: June 4, 2021 to August 26, 2021.
This is a CT Licensed Youth Camp that is operated by the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

Selection Plan

Considerations:
  • Must be at least 20 years old as of June 4, 2021
  • Applicants must be able to work for the full season and must complete all required DDS training
  • Must be certified in the American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider, American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards, American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Provider or American Safety Health Institute CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer
  • Must satisfy one of the following:
    1. Certified in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, ARC trained lifeguard must also have ARC Waterfront Lifeguard Module for oversight of open waters such as ponds, lakes, streams, rivers and oceans, OR
    2. Certified in YMCA Lifeguard, OR
    3. Certified Boy Scouts of America Lifeguard, OR
    4. National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification (NPLQ) Royal Life Saving Society (UK), OR
    5. Certified in NLS Pool Lifeguard or NLS Waterfront Lifeguard (Canada), OR
    6. Ellis & Associates course completion or license for ILTP (for special facilities), OR
    7. Certified in Lifeguard-Pro- Waterfront, Youth Camp, Swimming Pool or Deep Pool.
  • Must have or be willing to complete one of the following courses prior to the start of camp in the type of small craft for which they are responsible:
    1. American Red Cross Fundamentals of Canoeing Course; A.R.C. Basic Sailing Course,Start Sailing Right); A.R.C. Basic Rowing course; A.R.C. Basic River Canoeing (for river/white water); A.R.C. Fundamentals of Kayaking; A.R.C. Small Craft safety for Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, Rowing and Moving Water; ARC Basic River Kayaking, OR
    2. Boy Scouts Aquatic Instructor Certification (for rowing/river canoeing/flat water Canoeing/sailing/motor boating) Essentials of River Canoeing (for river/white water), Essentials of Canoe Touring for flat water), Essentials of Kayak Touring (for flat water), OR
    3. Environmental Learning Centers of CT-Basic level or Instructor level- Basic Kayaking flat water), Basic River Kayaking (river/white water), (Basic River Canoeing (river/white water), Basic Canoeing (flat water)
  • Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers. Must be able to lift and transfer boats and individuals
  • Incumbents must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training in, then independently implements, policies and procedures designed to achieve objectives of a program for persons with intellectual disabilities; provides assistance and instruction to individuals in activities of daily living; participates in therapeutic programs for development of individuals capabilities; provides guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships; implements individual program plans; participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals; performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment; participates in social and recreational activities; reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable interpersonal skills; ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals; ability to train individuals in self care habits, personal hygiene and proper social conduct; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or training that could be expected to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working or volunteering with people with intellectual disabilities, autism or physical disabilities.
  • Experience working or volunteering in camp or other recreational settings.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain their Medication Certification as   defined by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing Declaratory Ruling – Delegation by Licensed Nurses to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel,; when working in a location that does not have 24 hour nursing care.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
