The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is a state agency that provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their Families. We are seeking individuals who are looking to make a difference! 

We are currently recruiting for two (2) seasonal job openings for Licensed Practical Nurse positions at Camp Quinebaug who will work under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, Camp Administrator or Camp Manager. These positions (along with a full-time LPN) function as the camp nurse as mandated for CT Youth Camps licensed by the Office of Early Childhood. Acting as part of the nursing and camp team, you would be responsible for meeting the nursing needs of the camp, which includes campers and staff working on camp grounds.

ADDITIONAL KEY INFORMATION:
  • These are full-time seasonal positions, from June 4, 2021, to August 26, 2021.
  • Hours of Work: Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week.
  • Specific schedule to be determined but flexibility is needed to meet the needs of the camp, including training.
  • The first 2 weeks may be on part-time status and may involve availability up until 8:30pm. The last day of work includes a Saturday to close the camp.
  • Starting pay rate will be $27.53/hour
  • These opportunities are seasonal and non-benefit eligible
This is a CT Licensed Youth Camp that is operated by DDS. Camp Quinebaug provides a unique summer day camp experience for approximately 100 school aged children with developmental disabilities in northeastern Connecticut. Children with intellectual disabilities and autism are the primary population served at this camp. The camp is located on Wauregan Reservoir in Killingly on 11 acres and its waterfront is the only beach on this beautiful waterway. Arts, Crafts, sports and nature activities, music, swimming, boating, and fishing are some of the highlights of the busy camp schedule.

Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening and must specify their qualifications on their application. Applicants to this recruitment must possess/be able to complete the following:
  • Must be at least 21 years old as of June 4, 2021
  • Incumbents in this class must have a license or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing
  • Must complete all required DDS training: Valid CPR Certification, Abuse & Neglect  for children and adults, Physical Management Techniques (PMT), Infection Control, Water Safety and Emergency Preparedness
  • Applicants must be able to work for the full season
  • Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers
  • Incumbents must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state facility, this class is accountable for rendering bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals; measures doses and administers medications including insulin injections; documents medications using appropriate forms; performs narcotic counts; checks and may administer intravenous medications; reports changes in individuals to doctors; ensures that restraints are applied correctly; transcribes doctors medication orders; dispenses certain medications in doctor’s absence; applies topical medication; takes and charts temperatures, pulses and respirations; performs simple nursing treatments; monitors general individual needs including personal hygiene; reports on individual conditions and behavior; keeps the unit safe and healthy; administers enemas or suppositories; performs Foley catheterization care; orients individuals concerning medications and their use; may perform emergency first aid; may drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings; performs related duties as required.

DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: performs the full range of duties as described in the class specification for the Lead Developmental Services Worker.

DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION SERVICES: performs the full range of duties as described in class specifications for the Mental Health Assistant 1 or Mental Health Assistant 2.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care; knowledge of various medications used in conjunction for the care of individuals who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities; knowledge of infection control practices; some knowledge of nutrition and diets; basic knowledge of medical and lab sciences; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to keep records; some ability to lead staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to those who posses the following:
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. 
  • Experience working or volunteering at a camp or other recreational settings.
  • Experience communicating internally and externally with a diverse population both over the telephone and in written inquiries.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
