The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Forestry Division is currently recruiting for a Seasonal Resource Assistant position in the Forest Protection Program. This position will work out of DEEP's Western District's Joseph Bigwood Forest Fire Headquarters/Middlebury Garage location in Middlebury (Western District).

JOB DETAILS
  • Schedule: Work week is unscheduled, but primarily Monday-Friday, some weekends.
  • Hours: Up to 40 hours a week, some overtime possible.
  • Salary: $12-14 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. No benefits.
  • Duration: Job starts between April 15 and April 30, 2021. Positions are 1030 hours. 
  • Location: Joseph Bigwood Forest Fire Headquarters/Middlebury Garage, Middlebury, CT.

DEEP's Division of Forestry constantly monitors the danger of forest fire to help protect Connecticut's 1.8 million acres of forested land. Throughout the Spring forest fire season, DEEP sends daily advisories on forest fire danger levels to DEEP's state park forest field staff, municipalities, fire departments and the media. Forest fire danger levels are classified at low, moderate, high, very high or extreme. In an average year approximately 500 acres of Connecticut woodland are burned by forest fires.

Selected candidates must be fluent in English, be at least 18 years old and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Work under the direction of Fire Control Officer in carrying out programmatic duties. Duties will include wildfire suppression, equipment and facility maintenance, hazard mitigation work, hose washing and testing, improving road and fire pond access, invasive species control work, prescribed burn area preparation, prevention program involvement, and other work as needed. 

Perform work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities including, but not limited to: painting, cleaning, mowing. 

Operate necessary equipment; perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may drive fire response vehicles over 26,100 pounds. These positions involve the use of machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, pole pruners, leaf blowers, Bombardiers and UTVs.

May perform basic clerical duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with wildfire response
  • Experience building and maintaining fire equipment
  • Experience with chainsaws
  • Experience with GPS and/or Avenza
  • Possession of a Commercial Drivers License or Q equivalent for fire apparatus

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
