In a Department of Correction facility or district, this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of plumbing, heating and steam-fitting activities.
Plans, lays out and schedules work; instructs inmates in methods and techniques of measuring, cutting, threading and installing pipes, valves, gauges, and other fixtures involving the use of hand tools, pipe cutters, and pipe threading and bending machines; determines defects and maintains piping system for steam, gas, water, air and pressure; trains inmates in reading blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations; performs preventative maintenance; utilizes troubleshooting techniques to address problems with plumbing and steamfitting systems; repairs fire protection systems; performs air quality testing; acts as liaison with outside vendors, contractors and agency staff; works on specialized equipment relating to trade area; performs work on high pressure steam equipment; tests and monitor pumps, boilers and heating systems; keeps records and makes necessary reports; maintains custody and discipline and evaluates the performance of each inmate assigned to work area; may perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs; may purchase equipment; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in plumbing and steamfitting trades; knowledge of building codes; knowledge of maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems; basic knowledge of operation of institutional steam boilers and heating systems; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments; ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to read blueprints and schematics; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to troubleshoot issues relating to plumbing and steamfitting; ability to instruct inmates or other employees in techniques and skills of plumbing and steamfitting; ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; some supervisory ability.

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and may be exposed to the danger and discomfort associated with tools and machinery used in the trade.
