DEEP's Bureau of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division, is charged with advancing the conservation, use, and appreciation of Connecticut’s wildlife resources. The Franklin Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is part of the Wildlife Division. It offers walking trails, an exhibit room, hunter safety information and licensing, as well as wildlife information.

The Wildlife Division is seeking to hire a Seasonal Resource Assistant to work with the Conservation Education/Firearms Safety (CE/FS) Program, which provides classes for firearms, hunting, bowhunting, and trapping certification throughout the State of Connecticut.

Position Details: 

The position is located at the Franklin Swamp WMA in North Franklin, CT. The position is forty (40) hours per week with a schedule of 8:00 AM-4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

The position is strictly office work but is quite diverse in its scope. The Seasonal Resource Assistant will also be responsible for answering the phones. This includes answering any questions about certification, hunting laws, class schedules, and also providing assistance to the public with nuisance and distressed wildlife or determining who would best assist the caller. The Seasonal Resource Assistant will also be required to issue hunting and fishing licenses.

Salary: $12.00 – $14.00 per hour, depending on education and experience. No benefits.

Length of position: Approximately 6 months (no more than 1,030 hours), starting in January 2021.

Selection Plan

This is a non-competitive, open to the public position.

The selected candidate must be fluent in English, be at least 21 years old and have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

The selected candidate must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including ability to lift 55 pounds), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Works with volunteer Conservation Education/Firearms Safety Instructors. Manages new hunting class information and enters it onto the DEEP website; keeps track of student registrations; and packs hunting class materials and delivers these materials to instructors in the eastern portion of the state. Once classes are concluded and class materials are submitted by the instructors, classes are processed, certifications are sent to the students, and registration cards are filed.

Responsible for answering phone calls. These calls will cover questions concerning hunting certifications, hunting laws, class schedules, and nuisance and distressed wildlife concerns. Will be required to determine where to forward calls, depending on the questions asked.

Issues hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses using a computer kiosk. Will be required to use a cash register. Completes daily sales reports and reconciliation.

Provides support and assistance to other Wildlife Division programs.

Various clerical duties, such as entering data using a variety of computer programs, assist with issuing of daily permits, and direct mailings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants with the following will be given preference:

  • Experience with hunting and the safe handle of firearms;
  • Knowledge of wildlife management practices and the natural history of Connecticut fauna;
  • Experience with hunting and trapping laws;
  • Experience communicating over the phone, in person and via email;
  • Experience working on multiple projects;
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access;
  • Knowledge of nuisance and distressed wildlife, as well as experience in wildlife interpretation, are also a plus. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
