The Southwest Connecticut Mental Health System (SWCMHS), with three locations throughout Fairfield County, promotes and administers comprehensive recovery oriented services in the areas of mental health treatment and substance abuse prevention and treatment. These services include inpatient treatment programs and outpatient clinical services, as well as a wide range of additional supportive treatment services.

We are seeking qualified applicants for our vacant, full-time Telecommunications Operator position (PCN 084380). This position is located at 1365 Central Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06510. The work schedule is 2nd Shift 40 hours, 3:00pm – 11:00pm; with rotating weekends and holidays.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency, institution or facility communications unit or security office this class is accountable for transmitting and receiving radio and/or telephone communications.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives, transmits and relays police, fire, medical and other emergency information to and from security officers, firemen, paramedics, maintenance crews, vehicles and aircraft and other emergency personnel; operates communication equipment which may include radio, telephone and related communications equipment; responds to complaints and refers to appropriate field personnel; receives information on matters which may include traffic accidents and injuries on state property and police, fire and medical emergencies; monitors alarm systems at state institutions or facilities; records time and nature of communications received and maintains files for purpose of ready identification; advises supervisor on all unusual or emergency incidents; at a state institution or facility may also operate main switchboard; may monitor other state and local police, fire and medical radio frequencies; may monitor citizen band radio emergency channels; may monitor closed circuit television camera located at points within the state complexes; may operate radio transmitter for paramedical electrocardiogram (EKG) analysis; may operate a computer; may perform varied clerical, typing and statistical work; performs related duties as required.
University of Connecticut Health Center, Call Center: Responds to telephone inquries, determines caller's need, and communicates need to appropriate individual, medical staff or provider; obtains patient information and verifies accuracy of system data; documents telephone inquries, complaints, conversations and action taken; schedules appointments and sends out appointment letters; calls patients for scheduled appointments and instructs patient in any necessary preparations; responds to correspondence and handle request as needed; maintains records.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to speak proper English and to enunciate clearly; ability to operate office and communications equipment; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations with judgment and discretion; ability to maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would be expected to provide the knowledge, skill and abilities outlined above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our preferred candidate will:

  • Have at least 1 year experience working in a Customer Service Position supporting both internal and external customers.
  • Have experience relaying confidential information from client medical records.
  • Have experience as a telecommunication dispatcher.
  • Have at least 1 year experience working with persons impacted by mental illness and/or substance abuse.
  • Have at least 1 year experience working in public safety or security-related fields. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to work a schedule that includes weekends, evenings and holidays.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to receive certification as a Telecommunicator within one (1) year of appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

A physical examination may be required by the appointing authority. Applicants must possess normal hearing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents of this class may be required to work in tiring positions for long periods of time.
