Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Wildlife Division is charged with advancing the conservation, use, and appreciation of Connecticut’s wildlife resources.

The Wildlife Diversity Program is actively involved in the conservation and management of birds, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals including bats, invertebrates, and state and federally listed species. Work occurs statewide in habitats ranging from coastal beaches to upland forests. Management and conservation activities for this diverse group of wildlife species can be extremely varied.

DEEP's Wildlife Division is seeking multiple Seasonal Resource Assistants to contribute to a variety of Wildlife Diversity Program projects. These positions will assist program biologists conducting research, monitoring both the health of populations and their habitats, and conducting conservation activities. Technical assistance, public outreach, and education are key program elements. The program works with landowners, municipalities, and the general public to manage and protect hundreds of wildlife species and their habitats, develop and implement recovery plans for rare species, and also provide technical assistance to the public for nuisance wildlife.  

The positions are based at the Wildlife Division’s Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington, CT, but work will be conducted statewide.  

Salary: $12-$14, depending on experience. Benefits and housing not provided.  

Length of position:  Duration is approximately 6 months (no more than 1,030 hours). These positions will start at various times beginning in late September.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

Selected candidates must be fluent in English, be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. 

Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include:

  • conducting wildlife surveys of birds, bats, invertebrates and herpetofauna;
  • specimen collection;
  • fencing shorebird nesting habitat;
  • assessing recreational use of wildlife habitat;
  • vegetation management/invasive species removal;
  • cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
  • general office work;
  • data entry, and
  • responding to telephone and email inquiries from the public about wildlife.

Site visits may be required involving interaction with the public, coordinating volunteers, and providing educational information to the public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A college degree in biological sciences or coursework in wildlife management or a related field. Candidates with work experience in a related field may be considered. 
  • Experience conducting field work and collecting biological information.
  • Experience using GPS technology and navigating using map and compass.
  • Well-developed computer skills with experience entering and summarizing data using software products such as Access, Excel and GIS software.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow directions and work cooperatively with others, as well as independently.
  • Willingness to work long hours in field, day or night as program needs dictate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
