Introduction


The State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - North Region - currently has one (1) part-time, 17.5 hour per week job opportunity for a Developmental Services Worker 2 based out of the Public Division's Step Down Unit at 79 Mountain Road, Newington, CT. 

This is a part-time 17.5 hour per week position with the following schedule:
1st Shift: Monday, Tuesday - 6:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.                                                                                   

Candidates must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency as employees can be mandated to work overtime.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee of the Department of Developmental Services, who has permanent state status*, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening.  You must specify your qualifications on your application. 

*For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period.  For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle License.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties consistent with Developmental Services Worker II job specification. Implementation of residential living program for individuals in a residential setting designed to divert individuals in crisis from emergency room settings.  This unit will provide intensive behavioral supports and stabilization while working with teams to develop comprehensive transition plans to an appropriate, long term, community based residential setting. Oversees and may participate in general care including meal preparation, feeding, clothing and treatment; directs and advises staff on implementation of  treatment strategies; assists in evaluating performance of residential program; implements policies, programs and operational procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations and with regard to needs of individuals; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; may complete a variety of reports, notes, logs, requisitions, etc.; may design and write residential living programs; may provide orientation and Inservice training to subordinate staff; may order, secure and distribute supplies and equipment; may attend interdisciplinary team meetings; may arrange for appropriate support services; may administer first aid in emergency situations; may serve as backup for Supervising Developmental Services Worker; performs related duties as required. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions, performs related duties as required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of fundamentals of hygiene and physical training; knowledge of safety, fire and first aid procedures; basic knowledge of interdisciplinary process for development of individual programs; considerable interpersonal skills; basic oral and written communication skills; skill in behavior management of individuals; ability to recognize and report behavioral change; ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals; ability to lead and participate in recreational and occupational activities; ability to follow oral and written instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the care and supervision of individuals with developmental disabilities at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 1 (or equivalent experience in a human service field).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference given to candidates who possess: 

  • Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities;
  • At least one year experience working with individuals who have significant behavioral and psychiatric diagnosis;
  • Considerable knowledge of modern approaches to working with persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities;
  • Experience working with individuals who have feeding tubes;
  • Experience driving wheelchair vans;
  • Experience with overhead lift systems;
  • Considerable interpersonal skills and develop a positive relationship with individuals;
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication;
  • Strong computer proficiency (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Medication Administration Certification from the Department of Developmental Services.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.
