The beautiful, gently sloping, soft sandy beach, picnic areas, train watching, diverse trail systems and salt marsh viewing platforms make the State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) parks ideal for families. Try crabbing or fishing. Look for ospreys, cranes, and herons or other waterfowl. CT State Parks provide something for all members of the family.
DEEP, Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division, Lifeguard Program, Silver Sands State Park, Milford, CT. Sandy beaches, boardwalks, seashells, and shore birds dominate the attraction to Silver Sands' beaches in Milford. Over a half mile of shoreline and three quarters of a mile of all-weather boardwalk make this a popular four-season waterfront destination.
Must be at least 16 years old. Must have a current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding with the Waterfront Module, or must be able to pass the course.
Work Location: Outside at designated swimming areas at Silver Sands State Park, Milford, CT.
Hours of work: are 10 am to 6 pm, typically five days per week for a total of 40 hours. Weekends and holidays are mandatory.
Pay rate is: $13.00 - 14.00 per hr depending on relevant experience. No benefits.
Length of positions: Memorial Day through Labor Day 2020.

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.
Selected candidates must be fluent in English and be at least 16 years old.
Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.
Selected candidates will demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques.
Selected candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety.
All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:
Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. The head must remain above the surface of the water.
Complete the ‘brick’ timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. (Candidates should not swim the distance under water.) Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Complete the ‘underwater swim’ event by swimming an accumulation of 15 yards underwater, in a single breath, picking up three dive rings.
Demonstrate proficiency in skill: Rescuing a Passive Victim with a Rescue Board at a waterfront setting. Candidate will have 2 attempts.
Must be able to demonstrate proper CPR for a victim on dry land vs. a victim pulled from the water (for those candidate who already possess a current lifeguard certification only).
Attend all class sessions of the lifeguarding course (if not already certified).
Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. This is to be completed in 10 minutes or less.
Candidates must be able to reach the outer edge of the swim zone (buoy) using a rescue board within 1 minute 30 seconds.
Must complete a 50 yard swim in 45 seconds or less.
Must complete a 1.5 mile run in 15 minutes or less.
