Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - North Region - Currently has one (1) part-time, 17.5 hours per week job opportunity for a Developmental Services Worker 2 based out of 1340 Stafford Road, Storrs, CT.

This is a part-time 17.5 hours per week position with the following schedule: 

1st Shift: Friday/Saturday - 6:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Candidates must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency as employees can be mandated to work overtime.

In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee of the Department of Developmental Services, who has permanent state status*, and meets the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application.

*For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period. For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This position provides overall care for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorders while staying at the Storrs Respite Center, which is part of the Individual & Family Support Division. The individuals served change each week. Receives training in, then independently implements policies and procedures designed to achieve objectives of a program for persons with intellectual disabilities; provides assistance and instruction to individuals in activities of daily living; participates in therapeutic programs for development of individuals capabilities; provides guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships; implements individual program plans; participates in preparation, serving and feeding of meals; performs housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and healthy environment; participates in social and recreational activities; reinforces appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques; provides care to individuals with moderate to severe behavioral challenges; provides care to individuals with complex medical needs; provides integration into community settings and participation in inclusive events and activities; documents and records case notes; utilizes computer and technological equipment for communication with individuals, families, staff and for researching appropriate community programs and activities; utilizes assistive technology and may host family nights; may administer selected oral medications with appropriate training; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of fundamentals of hygiene and physical training; knowledge of safety, fire and first aid procedures; basic knowledge of interdisciplinary process for development of individual programs; considerable interpersonal skills; basic oral and written communication skills; skill in behavior management of individuals; ability to recognize and report behavioral change; ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals; ability to lead and participate in recreational and occupational activities; ability to follow oral and written instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the care and supervision of individuals with developmental disabilities at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 1 (or equivalent experience in a human service field).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

  • Experience working with both children and adults with intellectual disabilities living in the community with their families.
  • Who have direct care experience with individuals with intellectual disabilities with behavioral challenges, and experience with those with complex medical needs.
  • Experience in implementing strategies for individuals for the development of personal life skills which include, cooking, cleaning, activities of daily living, self-advocacy, recreation and community safety & integration.
  • Experience with computers and assistive technology, with the ability to assist individuals with the operation of technological equipment for communication and control of their environment, as well as for educational and recreational purposes.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Medication Administration Certification from the Department of Developmental Services.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
