Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - North Region - Currently has one (1) full-time job opportunity for a Supervising Developmental Services Worker 1 based out of North Street in Willimantic.

This is a thirty-five (35) hour per week position with work schedule as follows:
Tuesday: 12 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.; Friday 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and Saturday: 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday
However, must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as a supervisor or lead worker.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties consistent with SDSW job specification. The SDSW provides leadership, supervision & direction to direct care staff, and seven (7) individuals with complex challenging behaviors / medical needs living in a Licensed CLA home. Duties and responsibilities include: oversee payroll, overtime distribution and approval; develop & implement individual centered teaching strategies and train employees to successfully implement these programs; implementation of Licensing procedures & Plan of Corrections; ensure DDS Policies & Procedures are followed to ensure Health & Safety of all individuals; train individuals / employees in Fire and Emergency Evacuation drills; ensure employees assists each individual with meal preparation / planning, grocery shopping and leisure activities in the community; manages consumer house funds; conducts and manages staff orientation / in-service training; provides direct supervision to employees on all shifts including LPN's; provides leadership of the support team and is the liaison between the CLA, day program providers, parents, guardians, IDT and community medical providers; works with medical personnel to insure medical appointments are scheduled and the availability of support staff to transport as required; ensures maintenance and daily upkeep of the home is maintained, performs other duties as required. Incumbent may be required to "work in coverage."

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of modern methods of working with individuals with intellectual disabilities; considerable knowledge of goals, policies and organization of a residential living unit; considerable knowledge of rehabilitative and interdisciplinary process; knowledge of support services provided in residential care such as housekeeping, dietary, maintenance and laundry; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to implement policies and operational procedures; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual or other developmental disabilities at the level of Developmental Services Worker 2.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be give to those with:
•Ability to develop a positive relationship with individuals
•Considerable knowledge of modern approaches to working with persons with intellectuals/developmental disabilities
•Considerable knowledge of goals, policies and organization of residential and community support services
•Experience providing supervision and oversight to a large number of employees.
•Proficiency in verbal and written communication
•Considerable interpersonal skills

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
