Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - Central Office - has one (1) current full-time job opportunity for a Trainer position in the Educational Support & Staff Development Division based out of Southbury Training School in Southbury, CT.

This is a full-time forty (40) hour per week position. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:30am -5:00pm. However, must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency.

Selection Plan

  • Incumbent in this position will be required to possess and maintain specialized certifications upon appointment (e.g. CPR and PMT). Incumbent may be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications as needed.
  • Incumbent in this position WILL be required to have the flexibility to work outside scheduled hours as needed on a frequent basis.
  • Incumbent in this position will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbent in this position will be required to travel statewide.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in preparing and conducting training programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Develop and teach training courses; assist in planning, developing, coordinating and evaluating comprehensive training programs; develop needs assessments in coordination with DDS divisions; Create course objectives, write objectives-based curricula including presentations, trainer notes, and skill checks; Identifies and employs creative training methods and materials including video, audio, presentations, activities and experiential learning; researches learning material and resources; provides technical assistance and consultation on high quality curriculum as well as technology; maintains records and prepares reports; Maintains a library of training materials in an organized fashion with ability to share; monitors and supports adjunct instructors; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles and techniques of training and staff development; knowledge of education methods and techniques; ability to assess training needs and determine objectives; ability to develop, organize and conduct training courses; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of technical experience in training, staff development, or adult education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
2. A Master's degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with SABA platform;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite - Substantial facility with Excel;
  • Experience with online learning design tools such as SnagIt, Articulate or Lectora;
  • Ability to utilize computer software and learn new proprietary systems quickly;
  • Substantial knowledge of adult learning principles;
  • Capable of teaching, employing best practices of training and staff development;
  • Ability to develop, organize and conduct training courses in an interactive, participant-focused style, with high degree of creativity and flexibility;
  • Strong commitment to presenting curriculum as written and in its entirety;
  • Proficiency with use and troubleshooting for multiple types of equipment used in trainings (e.g. laptops, PCs, projectors, sound systems, etc.);
  • Ability to coordinate training on two shifts;
  • Ability to manage a cadre of 30 instructors;
  • Creative problem-solving with strong initiative and good judgment;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, efficiently, and amicably;
  • Ability to function in a matrix management environment;
  • Ability to negotiate acceptable strategic initiatives with competing priorities and stakeholders.

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess specialized certifications for designated positions prior to appointment.
