DEEP's Bureau of Central Services is currently looking for a Maintenance Supervisor 1 (General) to lead the Engineering & Field Support Services Squaw Rock Maintenance Facility in Plainfield/Moosup, CT. This position will be responsible for daily oversight and supervision of an automotive shop and a carpentry shop of highly-skilled trade workers. The mechanics are responsible to maintain and repair all of the East District state owned vehicles and equipment and conducting CDL inspections. The carpenters are responsible to maintain, repair or advise on 400 buildings located throughout the East District as well as special projects. 

This Maintenance Supervisor position also has project management duties overseeing in house staff, as well as private contractors working for this Division and other Divisions.  

This is a 37.5 hour per week position, 7:00am-to 3:00pm, Monday thru Friday.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing in one of the following ways:

1. Supervises a small crew (usually 1-5 workers) of highly skilled trades workers (Qualified Craft Workers and General Trades Workers) and skilled workers (Skilled Maintainers) but not solely Skilled Maintainers unless they are on a grounds crew and other lower level employees.

2. In large crews (6 or more workers) of highly skilled trades workers, assists the Maintenance Supervisor 2 in carrying out supervisory functions. This is appropriate only when there is a demonstrated need for a subordinate supervisory level.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans crew work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; performs some of the more skilled duties involved; may estimate time, skills and material needed for proposed repairs or improvements; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment involved in the trade indicated by the parenthetical title of the class; considerable knowledge of relevant State and national codes and regulations; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; skill in performing technical duties of the class; ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, and sketches; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings.

Note: Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of the General Experience must have included performing skilled tasks in either the maintenance and repair of buildings or the military experience referenced above.

Note: For State Employees this is interpreted at or above the level of Skilled Maintainer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from vocational or technical school may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment in the automotive and mechanical trade.    

Considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment in the carpentry trade.    

Demonstrated experience supervising and scheduling a crew.   

Excellent organizational and project prioritization skills.    

Experience supporting a crew with required training and guidance, tools, materials, equipment and providing a safe and productive working environment.  

Experience inspecting work/projects for quality and consistency with industry standards and critiques work as necessary.  

Experience as a working supervisor, knowledgeably in technical aspects that is required of this crew.  

Considerable knowledge of the DEEP Project Request process.  

Experience reading and interpreting plans, blue prints, and specifications.  

Good computer skills.  

Good experience utilizing DAS Contracts and the DEEP Purchasing process.  

Good oral and written communication skills.  

Good knowledge and/or experience with the performance evaluations process.  

Good knowledge and/or experience with the disciplinary process and policy 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
2. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
