The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) Laboratory is currently recruiting for a Connecticut Careers Trainee (target title Chemist 1). This position is located in the Environmental Chemistry Division and the selected candidate may perform duties and testing throughout Environmental Chemistry according to the needs of the laboratory. The Environmental Chemistry Division is divided into several areas including: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Radiochemistry and Blood Lead/Chemical Preparedness.
This position is full-time, first shift, 35 hours per week, typically Monday – Friday.
Candidates selected for interview will be required to provide a copy of their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree diploma.

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional position.
In a department or institution receives training in introductory governmental work for development of skills and knowledge in field of public administration in order to qualify for advancement into agency professional positions; performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during course of training period; performs related duties as required.
Oral and written communication skills; ability to acquire knowledge and skills required for the target classification; ability to understand, evaluate and solve problems by exercising judgement and logic; ability to read, interpret and understand written material; ability to perform basic arithmetical computations; ability to interpret charts, graphs and tables; learning and reasoning ability; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with superiors, associates and general public; ability to utilize computer software.
Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
NOTE:
Please note – For appointment as a Connecticut Careers Trainee with a target title of Chemist 1 only college training in chemistry or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree. A Master's degree in chemistry or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
• Experience with use of laboratory preparation equipment such as pipets, centrifuges, incubators, shakers, balances etc.
• Experience with carrying out laboratory testing using written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Experience carrying out analytical testing procedures using laboratory instrumentation.
• Experience with using products such as Excel, Word or other programs for generating sample work lists and calculating results.
• Experience with adherence to Laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control requirements.
