DEEP's Bureau of Central Services, Engineering and Field Support Services Division provides support to many of DEEP's Divisions including Parks, Boating, Wildlife, Fisheries, Forestry, Haz-Mat, Dam Safety and others.

Engineering and Field Support Services is seeking to fill an Environmental Protection Maintainer 2 position for the West District Construction Crew. This position is critical in supporting the crew that is responsible for the maintenance and repair of DEEP roads, public parking lots, trails, bridges, installation and repair of utilities, DEEP owned public boat launches with floating docks (installation, removal and maintenance) as well as infrastructure projects and repairs. There are approximately 425 DEEP owned buildings located throughout the West District; 121 miles of gravel roads, 37 state owned boat launches and 102 state owned dams and flood control areas. 

The position is based at the Thomaston Garage in Thomaston, CT.

This position is 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.

Selection Plan

This position is non-competitive. Open to the public as well as agency employees .

The selected candidate must have a CDL license or must obtain a CDL license within six months of hire. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon obtaining the CDL license.

The selected candidate must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties of the position and work well with other staff. 

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing maintenance and moderately skilled tasks in trade practices.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs general maintenance and moderately skilled maintenance work at facilities owned by or under control of Department land, buildings and equipment including but not limited to simple automotive repairs and light equipment repairs; sharpens saws and axes; performs simple plumbing tasks such as a union change or faucet repairs, rough carpentry, painting, minor electrical repairs, etc.; operates and maintains trucks, tractors, boats and related equipment; uses and maintains fire fighting equipment; may lead a small seasonal crew or group of fire fighters; may do planting, transplanting, cutting and pruning; may perform tasks relating to care, propagation and stocking of fish including maintenance and repair of hatchery and stocking equipment; may work with blueprints and specifications; may work with support services in areas of general maintenance of lands, buildings and dams; may perform patrol and fire fighting activities; may act as a firefighter; may perform clerical duties of very limited duration; may perform emergency first aid as needed; performs related duties as required.

This specific position independently performs maintenance duties such as parking lot and access road repairs and maintenance, ice and snow removal; operating CDL trucks (tractor trailer truck with tilt trailer and low boy trailer, 10 wheel dump truck and 20 ton equipment trailers, dump, 1000 gallon Tanker truck, Plow truck ,and 3/4 and 1 ton pickup trucks with landscape trailers) and  heavy construction equipment (bull dozers, excavators, loaders, graders, compaction roller, mower and tractor compact track loaders, wood chippers, portable pumps, landscape equipment)  to perform moderately skilled tasks  such as routine maintenance and repairs to DEEP boat launches and docks, buildings repairs, road grading and pot hole roads, maintenance of flood control areas and state own dams; general equipment maintenance; and general building maintenance and repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Interpersonal skills; ability to perform general maintenance and semi-skilled trade tasks; ability to operate and make repairs to small tools and mechanical equipment; ability to follow general instructions; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in maintenance and repair work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a secondary school with specialization in a trade pertinent to the operation, maintenance and development of natural resources may be substituted for the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience performing a full range of moderate tasks in construction, grounds maintenance, building maintenance, snow removal and equipment maintenance;

Experience operating CDL trucks and heavy construction equipment;

Experience following instructions and working independently;

Basic experience/ knowledge in leading seasonal staff; and

Basic computer skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and retain a Standard First Aid certificate and CPR certificate.
2. Incumbents engaged in the operation of heavy equipment will be required to possess and retain the necessary current licenses, permits and or certifications as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.
3. Incumbents performing skilled trade work may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses and or certifications as required by a particular trade.
4. Incumbents may be required to operate a motor vehicle and to possess and retain the appropriate valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, such as a Commercial Driver's License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be in good health and must have and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to effectively perform the duties of the class.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury working under varying weather conditions, lifting moderate weights and handling chemical solutions.
