DEEP's Municipal Wastewater Program in the Water Planning and Management Division provides guidance, funding, support, and regulatory oversight to municipalities regarding all aspects of wastewater discharged to Connecticut waterbodies. The Municipal Wastewater Program administers the technical components of the Clean Water Fund, from planning the required infrastructure, through design and providing construction oversight. The Municipal Wastewater Program is responsible for certifying the qualifications of wastewater treatment operators in the state, as well as the classification of wastewater treatment facilities. On behalf of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Municipal Wastewater Program drafts and issues National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits to wastewater treatment facilities, which protect waterbodies throughout Connecticut.
DEEP has a current job opportunity for an Engineer Intern within the Bureau of Water Protection and Land Reuse, Municipal Wastewater Program. Engineer Interns receive training under direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year before being promoted to the target class of Sanitary Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.
This position provides a unique opportunity to join a team committed to ensuring public health and safety and protecting the environment. As a trainee, interns learn to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and regulations, assist with emergency planning and storm response, provide technical assistance to municipalities and the general public and protect public health and safety and the environment through ensuring appropriate and adequate treatment of wastewater.
Candidates with civil or chemical engineering degrees are encouraged to apply.
The position will be located at DEEP Headquarters, 79 Elm Street in Hartford, CT.
This position is 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, from 8:00-am to 5:00 pm (flexible).

General knowledge, through education or work experience, of principles, practices and methods of wastewater treatment and conveyance including hydraulics and physical and biological treatment;
Familiarity with reading, interpreting and using engineering reports, technical charts, graphs, data tables, drawings and plans, and environmental assessment and evaluation techniques;
Excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills and experience communicating technical, regulatory, policy or operational information to a wide variety of audiences in a clear and understandable manner;
Experience in prioritizing and tracking multiple activities/projects to ensure timely completion and quality of deliverables;
Proficient computer technology skills and experience using computer software including MS Excel, MS Access and Geographic Information System software (GIS);
Ability to prepare technical reports and other professional documents; and
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
