Introduction

DEEP's Quinebaug Valley Hatchery is responsible for the production of the majority of the state’s trout and has four main areas: The Hatch House is used to incubate and hatch the fish eggs.  When the fish reach 3” in size, they are moved to the intermediate tanks. Intermediate Tanks consist of 30 circular tanks 20 feet in diameter.  Each tank can hold up to 30,000 3" fish.  The fish remain in these tanks until they are 6-8" in length when they are transferred to the outside grow out tanks.Grow-Out Tanks consist of 40 outside circular tanks 50 feet in diameter.  They are covered by netting to control predatory birds.  Each tank can hold up to 13,000 6-8" fish.  The trout will remain in these tanks until they are ready for stocking. Brood Stock Raceways consist of 20 raceways 50' long by 6' wide.  Brood stock are the fish that provide the eggs needed for use in the hatch house.

This state of the art numerical control facility is managed from the control center located in the main office where the operator can observe water quality, monitor well pumps, program feeding systems, program/access alarms and review historical trends of the facility.  There is an onsite backup generator that can supply power to the entire complex as necessary.  The secure spawning area and the hatch house are managed for disease prevention and monitored for quality assurance.  The photoperiod (length of daylight) of the fish is manipulated for controlled growth patterns as determined by the needs of Fisheries Management efforts.

DEEP currently has several openings for EP Seasonal Resource Assistants at Quinebaug Hatchery. Job duties include general maintenance activities such as loading stocking trucks, stocking trout in lakes and rivers across the state, spawning, feeding and transporting fish within the hatchery. Other duties may include building and grounds maintenance. 

Pay: $10.10 - 13.00 per hour. There are no benefits for these positions.

The duration of these positions is six (6) months, Monday – Friday and or Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. There are no benefits for these positions.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

Selected candidates must be at least 16 years old, have the ability to perform strenuous tasks (including lifting up to 50 lbs.) and have good interpersonal skills.

 

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assist with the propagation of trout from egg to adult, cleaning fish rearing units, weighing feed and feeding fish, stocking trout throughout the state. Performs general maintenance tasks at facilities owned by or under control of the Department including but not limited to mowing lawns, raking, picking up trash, cleaning restrooms, washing vehicles, brush cutting and snow removal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

Applicants must have a good attitude, a good work ethic and willingness to learn.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in these classes who are assigned as patrol persons or supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in these classes may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.

4. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
