Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - North Region - currently has one (1) full-time, thirty-five (35) hours per week job opportunity for a Supervising Developmental Services Worker 1 based at 1279 Stafford Road in Storrs.

Position details are as follows:
This is a full-time, thirty-five (35) hour per week position. The work schedule is 1st & 2nd Shift: Tuesay & Thursday: 9:00am - 4:00pm; Wednesday: 1:00pm - 8:00pm; Friday & Saturday: 7:00am - 2:00pm. Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday. However, must be flexible in order to meet the needs of the agency.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as a supervisor or lead worker.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Supervising under state and federal regulations, DDS is required to provide adequate oversight at the ICFs, CLAs or Respites to ensure the health and safety of the individuals living there. The SDSW will supervise staff by directing and advising them on all duties and responsibilities related to the care of the behaviorally and medically complex population. Duties include arranging for fire drills and other safety inspections; insuring adherence to regulation and policy and procedure; writing and reviewing all documentation related to operations on the shift; addressing staffing level issues; making sure job performance standards are maintained; communicating issues of concern to management level personnel with job performance; may provide orientation and in-service training to subordinate staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of modern methods of working with individuals with intellectual disabilities; considerable knowledge of goals, policies and organization of a residential living unit; considerable knowledge of rehabilitative and interdisciplinary process; knowledge of support services provided in residential care such as housekeeping, dietary, maintenance and laundry; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to implement policies and operational procedures; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities at the level of Developmental Services Worker 2.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities
• Good writing and communications skills
• Computer proficiency (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
